The term "Palestine" came from the name that the conquering Roman Empire gave the ancient Land of Israel in an attempt to obliterate and de-legitimize the Jewish presence in the Holy Land. The Roman Procurator in charge of the Judean-Israel territories was so angry at the Jews for revolting that he called for his historians and asked them who were the worst enemies of the Jews in their past history. The scribes said, ‘the Philistines." So, the Procurator declared that Land of Israel would from then on be called "Philistia" [further bastardized into "Palaistina"] to dishonor the Jews and obliterate their history. Hence the name "Palestine." One more thing. Very often one hears the revisionists and propagandists finding ancient historical links between the "Philistines" and the Arab "Palestinians." There is no truth to this claim! The Philistines were one of a number of Sea Peoples who reached the eastern Mediterranean region approximately 1250-1100B.C. They were actually an amalgamation of various ethnic groups, primarily of Aegean and south-east European origin [Greece, Crete and Western Turkey] ... but surely not of Arabian origin! These Philistines were not Arab... and neither was Goliath! The Arabs of "Palestine" are just that... Arabs! And these Arabs of "Palestine" have about as much historical roots to the ancient Philistines as Yasser Arafat has to the Eskimos!

If anything, the name "Palestine" was associated with Jews. In the years leading up to the rebirth of Israel in 1948, those who spoke of "Palestinians" were nearly always referring to the region's Jewish residents. In fact, Arab leaders rejected the notion of a unique "Palestinian Arab" identity, insisting that Palestine was merely a part of "Greater Syria."

The main reason the USA provides weapons to Israel is for their defense as well as to prevent Israel from starting a more widespread war. One example:
The Gulf War (2 August 1990 – 28 February 1991), code-named Operation Desert Shield (2 August 1990 – 17 January 1991) for operations leading to the buildup of troops and defense of Saudi Arabia and Operation Desert Storm (17 January 1991 – 28 February 1991) in its combat phase, was a war waged by coalition forces from 35 nations led by the United States against Iraq in response to Iraq's invasion and annexation of Kuwait.

In response to the threat of Scuds on Israel, the US rapidly sent a Patriot missile air defense artillery battalion to Israel along with two batteries of MIM-104 Patriot missiles for the protection of civilians.

As the Scud attacks continued, the Israelis grew increasingly impatient, and considered taking unilateral military action against Iraq. On 22 January 1991, a Scud missile hit the Israeli city of Ramat Gan, after two coalition Patriots failed to intercept it. Three elderly people suffered fatal heart attacks, another 96 people were injured, and 20 apartment buildings were damaged.[118][119] After this attack, the Israelis warned that if the US failed to stop the attacks, they would. At one point, Israeli commandos boarded helicopters prepared to fly into Iraq, but the mission was called off after a phone call from US Defense Secretary Dick Cheney, reporting on the extent of coalition efforts to destroy Scuds and emphasizing that Israeli intervention could endanger US forces.

In addition to the attacks on Israel, 47 Scud missiles were fired into Saudi Arabia, and one missile was fired at Bahrain and another at Qatar. The missiles were fired at both military and civilian targets. One Saudi civilian was killed, and 78 others were injured. No casualties were reported in Bahrain or Qatar. The Saudi government issued all its citizens and expatriates with gas masks in the event of Iraq using missiles with chemical or biological warheads. The government broadcast alerts and 'all clear' messages over television to warn citizens during Scud attacks.

On 25 February 1991, a Scud missile hit a US Army barracks of the 14th Quartermaster Detachment, out of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, stationed in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, killing 28 soldiers and injuring over 100.

danholo wrote:Really disheartening to see Israel being quite clearly overtaken by the ultra-Right nationalists and religious nutters. I think the table has turned quite clearly. All of my liberal-minded friends are squeamish. There's just no middle ground, unfortunately.

But you must admit, this is nothing new. Look at the crack down on NGO's and the war on Peace Now or Breaking the Silence.

They were just far more vocal now because they thought Trump was going to let them do whatever they wanted, where before they had the common sense to discuss things behind closed doors. They foolishly talked about annexing the West Bank openly. Before their insincerity towards peace negotiations was an open secret, now it's just open.

danholo wrote:War brewing, too. The occupation turns 50 this year.

What do you expect with Avigdor Lieberman in charge of the Ministry of Defense? Lieberman brought back the heavy handed repression the moment he got into office, even with the military saying collective punishment bears no fruit. But then again just look at who Hamas has given the top job too.

Plus also wars distract the plebs from whatever shit is going on in internal politics and gives the politicians the good excuse to crack down on those who disagree. "How dare they, [insert NGO here] are against the troops who are fighting for our very survival!"

Rich wrote:If its so awful in the so called occupied territories, why don't the Arabs just fuck off?

The same reason the Jews didn't leave when the land was controlled by other powers, it was their home. Plus also moving, most people can't afford to just pack up and move to a different country.

Rich wrote:If they are Muslim Arabs why don't they fuck off to one of the whole number of Arab Muslim paradises that are available, and if they are Arab Christians, Pagans or Atheists, why don't they go and live in Assad's Syria? Why don't they just leave and make themselves new lives in these lands of opportunity where they won't be second class citizens?

So you expect a population living where they have been living for generations, to pack up and leave because another population shows up on their doorstep?

So if the Canaanites show up on the beach at Tel Aviv, the Israeli's should "fuck off" to somewhere else?
