Wikipedia wrote:Socialism in One Country (Russian: Социализм в одной стране Sotsyializm v odnoi strane) was a theory put forth by Joseph Stalin in 1924, elaborated by Nikolai Bukharin in 1925 and finally adopted by the Soviet Union as state policy. The theory held that given the defeat of all the communist revolutions in Europe in 1917–1921 except Russia's, the Soviet Union should begin to strengthen itself internally. That turn toward national communism was a shift from the previously held Marxist position that socialism must be established globally (world communism)

There you go Rich!

Now you know that Socialism in One Country is a general theory!

If you have trouble with other concepts, then Wikipedia is a pretty good place to start!

My sense was that Sartre (though an avid Stalinist) did not think Socialism in One Country was actually socialism.

My sense was that Sartre's 'thought' is much the same as my own.

Jean-Paul Sartre, ‘Socialism in One Country’ wrote:I shall concentrate on a single, contemporary example: the emergence in the USSR of the ideological monstrosity of ‘socialism in one country’. A critical investigation will show: 1. that the slogan was a product of conflicts within the leadership; 2. that beyond these conflicts, the slogan represented contradictions and transformations in Soviet society as a whole; 3. that inasmuch as it survived, it produced other verbal forms which supplemented and corrected it—which enriched both knowledge and practice, transcending the monstrosity and changing it into a truth.

Yeah, I found that same stub.

He refers to SIOC as an, "ideological monstrosity," that was mostly just a slogan and mostly died out pretty quick though was ultimately useful.

Not really a ringing endorsement of Russia being socialist, but I haven't found the entire article.

ideological monstrosity

"... inasmuch as it survived, it produced other verbal forms which supplemented and corrected it—which enriched both knowledge and practice, transcending the monstrosity and changing it into a truth."

I'm aware of the paragraph and in my summation I even mentioned that it became ultimately useful, in his view.

But since neither of us seem to have access to the full article, and I was asking you about SIOC, this is another distraction I've let you draw me into instead of actually dealing with the issue at hand.

I even mentioned that it became ultimately useful

Jean-Paul Sartre, Critique of Dialectical Reason, Volume 2 wrote:... the Stalinist formula - at first false, then more and more true

I was asking you about SIOC

A scholastic debate, of no practical importance. What matters is the direction of travel. As Lenin said, "the whole difficulty of the task which falls to our lot, the whole difficulty of politics and the art of politics, lies in the ability to take into account the specific tasks of each of these transitions."
