How Do Militaries Choose Their Uniforms/Military Style? - Politics Forum.org | PoFo

Military vehicles, aircraft, ships, guns and other military equipment. Plus any general military discussions that don't belong elsewhere on the board.

I have been wondering how militaries choose their uniforms and military styles, drills etc. For example, there are several established styles, notably British, German, French and Russian. Often the countries which were former colonies of a particular country will adopt the styles and uniforms of the former coloniser, often integrating local traditions. However what about those countries which were not colonies of any country and have no long established European military or drill tradition of their own? For example, how did Japan choose its military uniforms?

Can a country create its own style, would it do so by drawing on already existing ones?

Were North Korean and Chinese uniforms and drill styles adopted from Russia?

Can a country with an established style break from tradition and create something new or integrate foreign elements?

If New Zealand became a republic would it be appropriate for it to create its own uniforms different from the British based ones, perhaps integrating German and Russian elements?
