Somewhere in the world [here they say Ilopango caldera in El Salvador], a massive explosion occurs in 535 AD sending billions of tons of dust and ash into the upper atmosphere. In the months that follow, global temperatures drop, crops fail, famine spreads and bubonic plague awakens. The impact is massive: the great empires of the whole ancient world wither or die and a new era emerges: the Dark Ages.

David Keys has suggested this same event was caused by the Krakatoa volcano in Indonesia. There was a massive eruption there at about that time plus or minus a few hundred years. However, he has no proof for the date because no carbon dates are available there. However, Keys does have one good bit of evidence. In the capital of China [Nanking?] in 535 AD someone recorded in the annals a strange sound like distant thunder to the southwest or maybe south-southwest. OTOH, at Ilopango [pronounced 'el-o-pan-go' with soft a 'e' & long 'a'] there are carbon dates that set it between 520 and 540 AD. Now, 535 AD is in this range and the geological evidence for a very, very massive volcanic eruption at Ilopango at that time is conclusive. If the historical dating and the radio carbon dating are compared, the historical is more accurate. So, it erupted in exactly 535.

A youtube video says that the ice cores for this event actually have 2 large sulfur concentrations a few years apart. So, it is possible that they are both right. That would be strange.

There is good evidence that this event caused great damage to many civilizations, including; the Maya, Teotihuacán, Roman Europe, England, China, and Japan, etc. Maybe also the Arabian peninsula. More likely everywhere humans lived at the time.

This event was triggered by huge volcanic eruption(s).
Global Warming [GW] could do something similar only much different in the details.
The Club of Rome Report predicted in 1972-3 that uncontrolled exponential growth in the world's economy and population would trigger something similar in about 2050 plus or minus 20 years. They looked at economic growth, population growth, pollution increasing, growing resource use, and growing food production; leading to a collapse. There would be a drop in fresh water supplies, food production, fossil fuels running short, pollution poisoning people, wars would start, etc. They didn't talk about GW but it can be seen as a form of damage caused by pollution. They also didn't talk about methane-hydrates releasing the very bad greenhouse gas, methane.

A pessimist would really worry about the next 100 years.
