Victoribus Spolia wrote:Its a western phenomenon now, not a left-right one, and its not a constitutional one either, because the Supreme Court has ruled more consistently on speech than on any other issue, and it manifestly has dismissed hate speech and offensive speech as nonsense.

But this is not a legal matter or a constitutional matter, this is culture matter and a business-rights matter.

Businesses should have the right to fire people that cost them money. period.

so what are we left with?

the culture of outrage.

How do we fix that?

I don't think we can, but maybe everyone can start by not being little bitches all the time and get the fuck off social-media.

Yes, the tit-for-tat outrage is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

We as a society need to have some very serious discussions about this. I am not even sure I can properly articulate what it is that we need to be discussing at this point, but we should have started the discussion many years ago.

But in the meantime, hearing the hypocritical tone-deaf whining of the liberal elite over James Gunn's firing is just too delicious and satisfying. I simply cannot get enough of it.

Disney’s axing director James Gunn for his atrocious tweets was understandable. But it was wrong.

Let’s say this up front. Writer-director James Gunn wrote some appalling things on Twitter years ago.

His jokes about rape and sex with children not only cross the decency line, they continue to run for another couple of miles at full speed.

It’s not hard to understand why Disney — with its vast, rich empire resting on a foundation of wholesomeness and family friendliness — cut him loose late last week, despite his monumental success at the helm of Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies. (The first two grossed $1.6 billion; the third was due to start production this fall.)

The casual observer might be inclined to say good riddance to a guy who could respond to the hashtag #unromanticmovies with the suggestion: “Three Men and a Baby They Had Sex With” or come up with this tweet: “The best thing about being raped is when you’re done being raped and it’s like ‘whew this feels great, not being raped!’ ”

I can’t defend those writings and don’t want to.

Neither can Gunn, 51, who for years has regretted them and reasonably makes the case that he’s grown into a person who recognizes how atrocious they were, even if part of a comedic tradition that relies on shock and provocation.

“My words of nearly a decade ago were, at the time, totally failed and unfortunate efforts to be provocative,” Gunn said in a statement last week about tweets mostly from 2008 to 2011.

“I have regretted them for many years since — not just because they were stupid, not at all funny, wildly insensitive, and certainly not provocative like I had hoped, but also because they don’t reflect the person I am today or have been for some time.”

But Disney executives should have known what they were getting with Gunn, who was a different kind of filmmaker a decade ago, directing the comedy-horror picture “Slither”and a Web-series spoof called “James Gunn’s PG Porn.”

What caused the firing had very little to do with Gunn’s background and everything to do with the way the far-right dirt-diggers — “cyber nazis,” as they’re known — are able to use the Internet with the express purpose of ruining people’s lives.

Everything about it shouts “bad faith.”

“All of the outrage is completely feigned to weaponize outrage,” said Andrew Todd, who writes about gaming and film for the website BirthMoviesDeath.com.

He told me that he sees a clear link between Gunn’s firing and the 2014 controversy known as Gamergate in which online mobs viciously attacked female video game designers.

It is, he said, a clearly established pattern that has its own playbooks involving digging up old material, taking it out of context, contacting the victim’s employer and often using right-wing media and politicians to reach the end goal: career destruction.

In the case of Gunn, for example, Breitbart News and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) were along for the ride, with Cruz featured in a “news” headline calling for the director’s criminal prosecution. And at the center of things was the detestable Mike Cernovich, whose photo should flash every time the words “far-right troll” are used.

Let’s recall that some members of this crowd were behind the infamous Pizzagate episode, which resulted in a Washington restaurant, Comet Ping Pong, being targeted by a gunman looking for the location of Hillary Clinton’s supposed child-sex ring.

Much of the news media and most of polite society have little understanding of how these bad-faith attacks work. What is dug up is too often taken at face value, without crucial context about how tweets and other forms of expression are being turned into bludgeons in a cynical war against liberal values and individuals.

The question arises, then: What should Disney have done, given the outrage that was being fanned into a raging fire?

Plenty. Disney could have decided to back its creative talent, even censure him in some way, and explain just what was happening.

Corporate honchos could have said how reprehensible they found the tweets to be and made the point that artistic people experiment and grow in their development.

Onlookers are quick to compare this case to that of Roseanne Barr being fired for her racist tweet about Valerie Jarrett. It’s a flawed comparison: That wasn’t a decade old but from the present moment, showing that Barr — far from evolving — was the same old racist she always was.

And some are quick to compare the Gunn situation to the firings and demotions of the #MeToo movement. Again: The comparison doesn’t hold up well.

Gunn made disgusting jokes on the Internet. He didn’t harass people or use his power to demand sexual favors.

In short, you can’t defend James Gunn’s tweets, and it’s hard to defend him.

But in an era of escalating bad-faith attacks, it’s much worse to reward the mob with a scalp.

Right wingers really are odd. On one hand they worship capitalist swine like they were gods and claim that they should be able to fire their empoyees for anything with the employee having no defence whatsoever (muh free markets bro!) and on the other hand when it happens and someone is fired the right starting bitching and moaning about the right of workers not to be fired. :?:

Which is it? You can't have both.

Calling someone ‘turban man’ gets you fired immediately, but calling Trump supporters every name imaginable and advocating harassing them is acceptable journalism. You have to be very brainwashed not to see the double standard.

It depends on the employer surely? I am sure there some employers who would fire someone for calling someone turban man and some who wouldn't. It is entirely up to the employer, this is the exact situation you people have been trying achieve for decades by weakening unions and watering down laws that protect employees. Now in your moment of victory would are complaining that you have got the exact thing you spent decades fighting for.

I can barely remember the first movie and haven't seen the rest. I genuinely had no idea who James Gunn was before this and still don't care.

He will probably be quietly rehired when they churn out the next movie anyway. This Cernovitch style "dig through internet history and create a small but loud group shouting 'Pedo! Pedo!'" isn't new, but isn't old enough for large businesses to see what it is: manufactured outrage to score "wins" in some culture war the terminally online chuds think they can fight with keyboards.

The James Gunn thing is still going on both in the mainstream and in the alt-media.

Personally, I am not offended that James Gunn made abhorrent comments about child rape and gave shout outs to NAMBLA on Twitter, or where he posed as a Catholic priest in ageplay-themed photos.

I just love seeing one of the liberal mantras about free speech having consequences being thrown back in their faces.

It is good to see that idiot lunatic Dave Bautista running his mouth day in and day out about rehiring Gunn.

I also love the fact that the Guardian of the Galaxy stars are embroiled in this mess. I can only wonder how their publicists are dealing with this.

Everything about this just so great.

Dave Bautista Backpedals A Bit On Threats To Quit Guardians, But He’s Still Angry

The fallout from James Gunn’s sacking by Disney for inappropriate tweets from his past continues to dominate the news. After the cast of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies wrote an open letter asking for Gunn to be reinstated, Bautista went one further and suggested he may quit the franchise if Gunn’s script wasn’t used.
RELATED: Dave Bautista Says He Will Quit Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 If James Gunn’s Script Isn’t Used

However, in a more recent post on Twitter, Bautista appears to back down a little from that previous stance. You can see his post below, and while Bautista here mentions his legal obligations, he still seems mightily angry about the whole situation.

To be honest, given the language used here, I think Bautista has to be a little careful so he doesn’t push the Mouse to actually remove him from the franchise. Here Bautista basically accuses Disney of empowering neo-Nazis. I’m not sure if Disney will take kindly to those words, whether you fans agree with the sentiment or not is another story. Perhaps this is a part of Bautista’s exit strategy? Or perhaps Bautista’s passionate response to the situation is just his emotions getting the better of him?

We will have to wait and see how this situation develops further as time goes on. Will Disney announce their intentions regarding Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 script? Will they choose a new director for the project, and would anyone want the job now? Or could the unthinkable happen and Disney reinstate Gunn in some kind of capacity? At this point, anything seems possible and we will share any further information as soon as we get it.

Marvel staging last-ditch effort to get James Gunn back on Guardians 3, says report

Marvel Studios is attempting a last-ditch effort to convince Disney to reinstate James Gunn as director of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. According to a report on Deadline, Marvel isn’t trying to strong-arm Disney, but is looking for an amicable resolution to the fiasco.

Gunn was abruptly fired off Guardians 3 when old tweets of his were unearthed by a conservative commentator. Gunn apologised for the offensive nature of the tweets - he’d joked about rape and paedophilia in them - and accepted that it made sense for Disney to let him go, considering the bad press he’d attracted.

But Disney’s move was met with near unanimous resistance. A fan-led petition to get the Mouse House to rehire Gunn has amassed hundreds of thousands of signatures, and the central cast of the Guardians movies issued a signed statement pledging their allegiance to Gunn.

“We were all shocked by (Gunn’s) abrupt firing last week and have intentionally waited these ten days to respond in order to think, pray, listen, and discuss,” the letter, signed Guardians of the Galaxy, reads. “In that time, we have been encouraged by the outpouring of support from fans and members of the media who wish to see James reinstated as director of Volume 3 as well as discouraged by those so easily duped into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories surrounding him.

The Deadline report comes only a few days after Variety reported that Disney will not rehire Gunn and is in no hurry to hire a replacement. The studio still intends on using his script for the film, a condition that actor Dave Bautista has said would have to be met, otherwise he would quit the franchise and suffer the legal consequences. Bautista has also said that working for Disney without Gunn is ‘nauseating’.

Variety earlier reported that Disney isn’t worried about the cast quitting because they’re all locked down under airtight contracts. Star Chris Pratt’s upcoming film, Cowboy Ninja Viking, was partly delayed because of his Marvel commitments.

Gunn is considered to having been instrumental to the series’ success. The Guardians films have made a combined $1.6 billion worldwide, and were initially considered a box office gamble. Another Variety report said that numerous rival studios are chomping at the bits to get him on board one of their movies, but can’t make an official offer until the Marvel issue is resolved.

This Twitter thread is pretty funny.

Disney and the Marvel franchise disaster management teams must be in full crisis mode.

The franchise desperately wants Gunn back because he is an integral piece to their franchise, but Disney won't hire him back because he is toxic to their brand

Photos Surface of ‘Guardians’ Director James Gunn at Pedophilia-Themed Party

A few years later, this same Huston Huddleston, after being charged with soliciting a minor to appear in child pornography, pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography. He is now a registered sex offender.

Despite his objectively disturbing past behavior, ever since his firing, his fans, including the entire Guardians of the Galaxy cast, have been lobbying hard to convince Disney to re-hire Gunn to direct the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy 3.

None of Gunn’s defenders, though, has ever addressed Gunn’s connection to Huddleston, and the left-wing entertainment media have all coordinated in an effort to pretend the connection does not exist.

As a result, late last week, trial balloons were being floated to test the public reaction if Disney reversed itself. “Rumors” about the possibility of Gunn’s re-hiring were strategically leaked to the left-wing entertainment media.

According to the screenshots of the pedophilia-themed party, which appear to come from Gunn’s personal blog, the theme of the party was “To Catch a Predator,” which is the title of a popular NBC investigative series that ran from 2004-2008. Using hidden cameras, the show would catch alleged sexual predators who had arranged to have sex with children as young as 12.

One of the photos (Gateway Pundit has more) shows Gunn dressed as a Catholic priest posing with two young women dressed to look like children. One is in pigtails and pouting, another looks like she is about to cry as she holds a juice box and a doll. Father Gunn, who appears to be wearing eye makeup, looms over them.

The second photo features Gunn, again dressed as a priest, next to a pigtailed young women sucking her thumb. Kneeling on the floor in front of Gunn is a man made up to look like a clown. He has his hands around the throat of the second young woman wearing what looks like a babydoll dress. The photo also features a large rabbit and a man (in pigtails?) yanking at his pants.
