What do you think of Trump’s vow to withdraw from US-Russia nuclear treaty?

If the US ditches the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), it could collapse the entire nuclear non-proliferation system, and bring nuclear war even closer, Russian officials warn.
By ending the INF, Washington risks creating a domino effect which could endanger other landmark deals like the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) and collapse the existing non-proliferation mechanism as we know it, senior lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev said on Sunday.
The current iteration of the START treaty, which limits the deployment of all types of nuclear weapons, is due to expire in 2021.
Kosachev, who chairs the Parliament’s Upper House Foreign Affairs Committee, warned that such an outcome pits mankind against “complete chaos in terms of nuclear weapons.”
“Now the US Western allies face a choice: either embarking on the same path, possibly leading to new war, or siding with common sense, at least for the sake of their self-preservation instinct."
His remarks came after US President Donald Trump announced his intentions to “terminate” the INF, citing alleged violations of the deal by Russia and China.
By scrapping the crucial Cold War era nuclear agreement Trump is destabilizing global security, even if his ultimate goal is to negotiate a ‘better deal’ and to include other parties like China,...
A source within the Russian Foreign Ministry said that by scrapping the historic accord, Washington is trying to fulfill its “dream of a unipolar world.”
“This decision fits into the US policy of ditching the international agreements which impose equal obligations on it and its partners, and render the ‘exceptionalism’ concept vulnerable.”
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov denounced Trump’s threats as “blackmail” and said that Washington wants to dismantle the INF because it views the deal as a “problem” on its course for “total domination” in the military sphere.

The issue of nuclear arms treaties is too vital for national and global security to rush into hastily-made “emotional” decisions, the official explained. Russia is expecting to hear more on the US’ plans from Trump’s top security adviser, John Bolton, who is set to hold talks in Moscow tomorrow.
President Trump’s intention to withdraw from the Cold War-era treaty with Russia banning a wide array of nuclear weapons “would undo decades of bipartisan arms control,” Kentucky Senator Rand Paul believes.
The US president created a stir recently by vowing to pull out of what he called the “unacceptable” Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), accusing Russia of violating the agreement.
Trump vows to pull US out of ‘unacceptable’ nuclear missile deal with Russia
This raised a few eyebrows in Moscow, as well as among some of Trump’s fellow party members. The decision “would undo decades of bipartisan arms control dating from [US President Ronald] Reagan,” Republican Senator Rand Paul tweeted.
This is why John Bolton shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near US foreign policy. This would undo decades of bipartisan arms control dating from Reagan. We shouldn’t do it. We should seek to fix any problems with this treaty and move forward.
Then-President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev signed the historic accord in Washington in 1987. The deal – which envisioned the elimination of nuclear arms with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometers – was seen as a breakthrough for the rival superpowers during the Cold War.
Days before Trump’s announcement of plans to ditch the accord, US media outlets were already speculating about a possible withdrawal from the agreement, pointing to US National Security Adviser John Bolton as the key person advocating it. Senator Paul also gave his take on that in the tweet: “This is why John Bolton shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near US foreign policy.”
Russia castigated Washington’s attempts to use “blackmail” in international security issues. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said withdrawal from the treaty would be a “dangerous step.”
Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Konstantin Kosachev painted a grimmer picture, saying scrapping the agreement would bring the international community closer to nuclear war. “Humanity is threatened with complete chaos in the field of nuclear weapons.”

Doesn’t matter. Most such things are just bullshit anyway. What good does it do for Russia and the US to disarm while the rest of the world arms itself? The idea was to prevent proliferation. It has not done that.

Yes.

Hong Wu wrote:Well, sounds bad, but if it's true that they aren't complying there would be no reason to stay in the treaty. Still, pretty unfortunate.

Even more unfortunate if the Russians are complying to the INF Treaty.
A Kremlin spokesperson said on Wednesday that Russia continued to uphold its international commitments.
The US state department has made no official comment.
The alleged deployment is expected to be discussed during Wednesday's Nato meeting in Brussels, the first since President Trump took office.
Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said he would not comment on intelligence reports but added that any non-compliance from Russia on the arms control treaty would be a "serious concern for the alliance".
The Brussels meeting will be attended by US Defence Secretary James Mattis.
"Nobody has formally accused Russia of violating the treaty," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a press briefing.
"Russia has been and remains committed to its international commitments, including to the treaty in question," he said.

Fortunate for the corporations that profit from nuclear weapons contracts if the INF treaty is scrapped.
Boeing, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, GenCorp Aerojet, Huntington Ingalls, and Lockheed Martin. In other areas like nuclear design and production, the names at the top of the list will be less well known: Babcock & Wilcox, Bechtel, Honeywell International, and URS Corporation. When it comes to nuclear weapons testing and maintenance, contractors include Aecom, Flour, Jacobs Engineering, and SAIC; missile targeting and guidance firms include Alliant Techsystems and Rockwell Collins.

I am fine with this. These limitations between the US and Russia amount to little more than two people, standing waist deep in gasoline, arguing about who has more matches.

RT SAID: If the US ditches the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF), it could collapse the entire nuclear non-proliferation system, and bring nuclear war even closer, Russian officials warn.

Nonsense. During the cold war both the US and Russia had bunches of short and intermediate range missiles floating around. Today we could put nukes on drones and not violate the treaty. Cruise missiles are intermediate range weapons and can easily carry nukes.

Russia started this by deploying nuclear armed intermediate range cruise missiles anyway.

This is a tempest in a teapot. Putin doesn't care. This is just a ploy on the part of Trump to look tough on Russia before the mid terms. And, oh by the way, before Mueller releases his report.

If the EU would have even the remains of a spine they would threaten the USA to leave NATO over this.

Its a direct attack on central european interests. Russia cant attack the USA with these weapons, neither can the USA attack Russia with these weapons. So these kind of weapons can only be stationed and targeted at Europe.

But we all know Europe is spineless.

Haha OMG theres still people out there who actually care about this junk ?

The Mueller report will show nothing. If they had anything, they'd acted long ago. Duh !

Its the equivalent to Guantanamo: we dont have prove otherwise we could actually put these people before court, but whats to say against a bit human rights violations just to feed the common fear.

Thats all just propaganda.

Yes. We used to have these intermediate missiles stationed in the UK.
We had two US bases very close to where we live.
It's not very nice wondering whether your family might be nuked in a Russian strike.
It's no joking matter.
