Japan, being the only country in the world that still cannot accept its defeat in World War II and its outcome, has been trying to challenge Russia's sovereignty over the Kuril Islands for more than 70 years now and brazenly calls them its «northern territories». Japan uses various methods of influencing the public, such as propaganda and rallies, in vain attempts to prove not only to its citizens, but to the whole world that the Kuril Islands were allegedly illegally selected by Russia, and that the islands are originally Japanese.
So, the Japanese, driven by the thirst for «revenge», began to form public organizations with loud names of «leagues», «associations» and «unions» concerning the «northern territories» in the late 60s, and ministers for Okinawa and «northern territories», the Council for Relations with the Movement for the Return of the «northern territories» was formed, all with the aim of convincing the Japanese people and the world public that Russia allegedly wrongfully owns the territory of the Kuril Islands, which is unacceptable, all with the aim of convincing the Japanese people and the world community that Russia allegedly wrongfully owns the territory of the Kuril Islands, which is unacceptable, because this is confirmed in a number of international acts.

And in early May 2019, 60 Japanese were able to visit the South Kuril island of Kunashir as part of the «Free Visits» and «Visits to Grave Places» programs, which, according to experts, may allow Japanese people to feel at home.
The network of anti-Russian non-governmental organizations has actually become part of the mass information system of the Japanese population, in whose mind they have been forming for a long time a «complex of people humiliated by the Soviet Union» and provoking revenge. And now attention is paid not only to the adult and young population of Japan, but also to junior schoolchildren. Thus, in April 2019, it became known that in Japanese textbooks for elementary school students the southern part of the Kuril Islands was noted as a Japanese territory, which is regarded as «cartographic aggression».
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia regards this as another step by Japan, whose goal is to promote «a known position on the problem of a peace treaty», contrary to the generally accepted assessment of the results of the war. Nevertheless, despite the constant territorial claims, Tokyo will not be able to decide to move from words to actions and go against the most powerful military potential of Russia, which, of course, will protect the lands legally belonging to it.
