Campaign responded after Lloyd Blankfein, former chief executive of Goldman Sachs, said Sanders would ‘ruin’ US economy

Bernie Sanders’ campaign has accused the “Wall Street elite” of panicking after one of its leading figures attacked the presidential candidate in the wake of two straight victories in the nomination process.

In a Twitter post on Tuesday Lloyd Blankfein, former chief executive of Goldman Sachs, said Sanders’ election would “screw up” the US economy and delight Russia.

“If Dems go on to nominate Sanders, the Russians will have to reconsider who to work for to best screw up the US. Sanders is just as polarizing as Trump AND he’ll ruin our economy and doesn’t care about our military. If I’m Russian, I go with Sanders this time around,” he wrote.

But the Sanders camp hit back on Wednesday.

“This is what panic from the Wall Street elite looks and sounds like,” Faiz Shakir, Sanders’ campaign manager, responded in a tweet.

Blankfein’s post came after Sanders won the Democratic primary race in New Hampshire, his second win in the nomination battle after a narrow victory over rival Pete Buttigieg in Iowa.

Sanders has said that billionaires “should not exist” and proposed a wealth tax on the richest Americans.

Blankfein – who has a personal fortune of over $1bn – announced his retirement in July 2018 after 12 years at the head of Goldman Sachs. He has sparred with Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, in the past over Sanders’ plans to limit the amount of their own shares companies are allowed to buy back.

In 2012 Sanders called Blankfein the “face of class warfare” for supporting cuts to social security, Medicare and Medicaid and the two have previously sparred on Twitter.

Blankfein, a registered Democrat, supported Hillary Clinton in the last election.

If people really want to have fun and see the establishment explode, they should elect Sanders president.

Bernie should thank Blankfein for this.

Blankfein and co. just want to keep the ETF bubble going because they believe with a near religious faith that they have figured out how to manage complex risk. They know Sanders getting elected will probably be the last straw. In a lot of ways they are reminiscent of the August coupists who tried to save the Soviet Union.

Blankfein is a real bonafide political genius, he figures if he weighs in as a highly esteemed member of the banking community that would be a real blow to the Sanders campaign because everybody trusts and respects bankers. If I was Sanders I would be featuring that scumbag bankster fuck's tweet in every political ad I ran from now to the election.

The science was settled on that one, there was wide consensus among economists that those instruments were safe and effective.

anyway, it's ironic to say the least that Blankfein would be talking shit about anyone “screwing up” the economy given that him and his ilk just completely cratered the global economy not that long ago.

Shamelessness is a necessary quality in any "successful" personality. Lol.

I'm with corporate Democrats on this one. Bernie must not be allowed to destroy US economy and military. Should he somehow get the nomination, I guess Michael Bloomberg, Hillary Clinton, Nancy Pelosi and other corporate democrats will vote for Trump, despite him being their arch enemy, rather than have US destroyed by a socialist. Bernie Sanders is a delayed payback from Soviet Union

Would you bet your house on that?

I expect corporate Democrats to pursue the same strategy like Blairites in UK - not allow Bernie Sanders to win and progressives take over Democratic party. They hate Trump badly though and it will not be easy. But how could they vote for a socialist/communist?

Voting for Trump would be only for tactical reasons to get rid of Bernie. Immediately after elections they would start working on new impeachment of Trump.

How is Sanders going to destroy the economy or the military?

As far as I can tell, he is a centrist (compared to the world) and his policies are not radical at all. In fact, most countries already have most of these things and still have militaries and economies.

More like anybody with a brain and a 401k should vote for Monty Brewster before they vote for Sanders.

The question really is how is it possible for Sanders and his policies to not destroy the economy.

With major defense budget cuts to finance his free healthcare and other social programs. He will destroy economy by raising corporate taxes and making US corporations uncompetitive. Trump's lowering of corporate taxes to 21% was long overdue, had it occurred 10 years ago the trade deficit may had been in better shape. Raising taxes is a red line in globalized world. Return to tax levels 50 years ago is impossible.

There needs to be one democratic country in the world with a powerful army, and due to historical reasons it is US. It must stay that way. EU cannot fulfill that role, even if it increases defense spending. I invite those Americans who prefer EU style social democracy to move to EU. We have low unemployment right now. We even have a thread in Europe forum ready for you :)

The American political spectrum is shifted so ludicrously far to the right that anything short of Mad Max disaster capitalism is basically considered communism.

Sanders Green New deal plan cost $16 trillion and Medicare for all $32 trillion. Sanders is not a socialist he is communist.

Considering how much the US spends on defense, the US could literally cut their defense spending in half and still spend more than anyone else.

Also, public healthcare costs less than what the US has now, so this should also not have a negative effect on the economy.

So Sanders would just put it back to where it was. Since the USA was doing fine with the old corporate tax rate, it is illogical to claim this will destroy the economy.

The USA is questionably democratic, and as far as I can tell, there is no reason for it to have such an army, except to make people like Bush Sr. richer.

It seems to me that the recent presidency always defines the next one, and the Trump presidency defines a Sanders cabinet, like the Obama presidency most likely defined a Trump presidency, and the Obama presidency was encoded in the Bush II presidency, and so on. The American political pendulum is mechanical and predictable actually, and the extremes determine its dynamics and pace.
