@blackjack21 provided a summary of the incorrect beliefs held by conservatives, if which I was already aware.

I guess I should clarify that I am puzzled why they think all these things will happen with public health care when they have not happened in the many countries that have it.

All public healthcare systems have problems, because all healthcare systems have problems. Our public health systems have problems too. The VA is a fine example of a system with long-standing problems. Ironically, it took Donald Trump to reform that system. Medicare is always on the brink of bankruptcy, and the system is rigged so that doctors maximize what they charge Medicare because private insurers use Medicare reimbursement as a baseline for reimbursement with private insurance.

I'm puzzled as to why non-Americans are so passionate about America's healthcare system compared to other countries that don't have government run health care when the US healthcare system has no impact on their lives.

I'm on medicare thanks to Democrat LBJ. It works great and has saved me from bankruptcy.

So, I really don't care …… I got mine :) . My rather hidden point is that I would prefer to hear an actual intelligent policy discussion in lieu of the sewer shit that passes these days about either Biden or Trump. Infrastructure will do if you would prefer.

wat0n wrote:The informal economy is propped up precisely because of onerous regulations, including in Latin America itself (whenever the minimum wages are high relative to the economy's average income or other regulations place a burden on the labor market. For instance, American immigration law coupled with the inability to stop people from crossing the border leads to the same result regarding the work by illegal immigrants - in that instance there is a fair case to make that the immigration system needs an overhaul. The same happens in Latin American countries, como bien sabes).

That's why I think that, with the exception of monopsonistic labor markets (i.e. industries with a single or very few employers) I think government-set minimum wages can often be harmful and a stronger social safety net can be a better option from an economic efficiency point of view (as long as it is also well designed that doesn't remove the incentives to work), even if it means raising taxes. Ironically, that's how Nordic countries do it but for some reason progressives don't like to copy that policy.

Raising minimum wages is critical to becoming a viable and prosperous economy. Here there are people making as little as $60 dollars a week working twelve-hour shifts every workday. They get paid $120 pesos for a twelve hour day. Again $8 dollars a day won't solve a damn thing for you here. But that is what they pay. In this pandemic businesses feeling the pinch will lay off the $120 pesos a day workers. Where are they going to get unemployment insurance? No where. No food stamps, unemployment insurance. So? they wind up in front of my house trying to sell me dirt that is fertilized for $50 pesos a bag. I don't need dirt. My house is not a farm. But I bought it anyway. He then asks for cast off clothes for his kids and something to eat because he hasn't eaten in two days. He is from a small town named Cholul. They laid off all the lime and orange pickers. He has NOTHING to feed his kids. He got desperate and filled sacks with treated dirt and tried to sell it in town. There are a lot of people like him Wat0n. If there were unemployment insurance, living wages and food stamp programs and baby feeding programs? These people would be able to ride out the pandemic in Latin America and survive. They need socialist programs desperately in Latin America. But that means charging fucking taxes to huge corporations. Walmart finally paid YEARS of back uncharged taxes to the Mexican government. Why? The previous prez had people forgiving taxes from corporations due to corruption and the government doesn't spend on PEOPLE.

It is a vicious cycle. The socialist did force them to pay and was able to go and purchase supplies for the clinics in Mexico so they can help the sick and dying. The difference public funds make. Socialism. Not fucked up capitalist greed only.

AMLO announcing getting Walmart to pay back taxes.

No, raising minimum wages will and does simply generate informal work to evade the law, even more so in a country like Mexico. Or what, you think cops will show up and arrest the business owner for operating informally?

WE Forum wrote:But informality, by contrast, remains largely untackled. Nearly 140 million Latin Americans – about 55% of the working population – toil in the so called “informal” economy. Around 241 million have no access to social protection.

The irony is that, again, the Nordic countries don't have minimum wages for the most part. They are usually negotiated between trade and worker unions, and only in some industries. Instead, the governments will tax workers and businesses heavily to pay for social programs, and much of that redistribution will come from the latter than the former. So why rely on a policy that has in fact already failed?

Mexico has government-sponsored health insurance for its people. They are not letting them die because they can't pay. But they need a lot more investment. Investment from TAXES. Taxes that rich, corrupt assholes in Latin America refuse to pay. They don't pay because they are used to corruption and being forgiven the debt and having poor people work for shit wages and not have security. They lose elections and now are starting to be forced to pay and they SCREAM. Assholes! Pay the money, and invest in PEOPLE. So I don't have to worry about the guy selling dirt to me in the afternoon to feed his BABIES. Do you get it now YOU ASSHOLES! i am talking about the rich elite and greedy multinationals who refuse to pay taxes to the governments who have poverty running rampant in their nations!

If they started paying taxes at the percentages that they should be paying taxes, these hijos de su madre businesses and corporations what they charge small tiny businesses? They would have enough to solve massive amounts of problems in this society. But they don't. Because they follow the same model as the rest of those neoliberal corporations getting away scot-free with their crap. No pay. All profit.

Some smart UNAM students discussing the issue for how these corporations get away with murder:

What they need is to formalize their work, so they contribute to their social security system and in turn get access to social benefits. But that can't happen if their labor laws are a mess, due to the existence of their clientelist and corrupt political systems.
