Tarrifs is the one thing I 100% believe he will not do. It is too acute, no way to pass blame to others, etc. If anything, just some symbolic tarrifs on some things here and there as opposed to the sweeping set he promised.

When you are interested in the history of Puerto Rico we will continue then.

For now....you are being patronizing and very unable to understand what the other side thinks. You are stuck with patronizing stuff Hakeer.

No one is handed stuff for free and out of the goodness of their hearts in these systems in US or PR history Hakeer.

Everything has to be paid for. Including rights.

woodrow Wilson man had a very unpopular war on this hands. Most American citizens did not want to get involved in Europe. Or send their sons to die in WWI. if you could draft Puerto Rican men and force them to go to war for US government interests without having them protest? And be cannon fodder for the Wilson administration then why not? And you knew they can't vote but can die for you? Perfect incentive for making them statutory citizens. Not guaranteed by the US Constitution.

Read the insular cases.

You did not read them?

Garment district factories from NYC went looking for cheap labor on the island in waves.

Sanford Dole in Hawaii went looking for cheap labor in pineapple and sugar harvesting in Hawaii too.

Poverty never improved from 1898 all the way to the 1930s. What use was being US citizens if the poverty remains the same? Whether being or not being a US citizen?

That is what FDR faced. An entire nation of people who were US citizens during the Great Depression post the Wall Street crash of 1929.

if there was economic hardship in the USA in the Great Depression? it was much more severe on the island. The title of US citizen what good is it if you can't make money or compete for markets because all of the major decisions are only favoring the mainland interests and none are favoring the island's interests?

That is the question Hakeer.

The insular videos make some of the same points I mentioned. Companies in the U.S. see Puerto Rico as a good source of cheap labor, and giving them citizenship was a lure to get them here, and once here, not risk getting deported. As far as granting Puerto Rico statehood, Congress looks at it from a cost/benefit perspective both economically and politically. Economically, it would entail more from the federal budget. Politically, as I said, Republicans will always block it to prevent Democrats from getting two more seats in our closely divided Senate. That’s not patronizing, it’s just a fact, as are the reasons why Puerto Ricans choose to migrate and 57% voted for statehood a week ago. The guy who produced the video also supports statehood.

American corporations mostly don’t give a rat’s ass about anything except making money. If they don’t build a factory in Puerto Rico, it’s usually because they have a better location elsewhere, considering available infrastructure, labor supply, transportation costs, taxes, etc. I make exceptions for racists like Trump who think Puerto Ricans are vermin rapists and murders.

@Rancid

That is even worse than Tariffs by the way, not only does it cost money but it also destroys the manpool decreasing growth. Yes it removes the depression of wages to some degree but that in itself increases pressure on company competitivness. And this is not going to happen in high income industries, it will happen in inefficient industries in the first place.

So if this is combined with Tariffs then what is the idea i don't understand? Bring back production that is not that efficient in the first place and then increase wages even further for it due to lack of manpower. This is de facto creation of low efficiency or negative efficiency jobs through regulatory policies instead of using all that investment for lets say high efficiency and productivity jobs. Something along those lines.

At best they will go for "criminals" I would say that are related to real crime. I don't think that they will go for all illegal immigrants. May be I am too naive to look at this logically.

It all depends on if he plans to make good on his promise. Economy be damned in that case.

Perhaps your problem is that you are thinking logically. ;) Trump is a post-truth populist. Logic doesn't really factor into this. It's about emotion for the population. It's much more about maintaining myth for those in power (it's all symbols and slogans). It's a new era bro, get with the program.

Anyway, the billionaires at DOGE will take care of this. These billionaires will fix the things that the billionaires in 2008 didn't.

I'm sorry, but i find it so fucking comical that some of you really think this DOGE shit is going to help working people.

but but but, this time it will be different! Since when the fuck have rich people ever cared about the general population? :?:

Some of you are absolutely fucking gone. Gotta lay off that twiter/x/rogan as a news source.

Yet it is something he can do with relatively little pushback (legal and political) compared to 100% tariffs. I don't think he'd go after the other illegal immigrants, or at least not as easily as he can do it with asylum seekers.

They will control the House, the Senate, the Supreme Court, the federal courts by appointing hundreds of new judges that will be loyalists, and the richest people in the world will be in control of doing a Twitter sweep and Bitcoin deal on the entire system.

They will destroy any possibility of leaving office without violence Rancid. And even if some crazy does Trump in or the Intelligence community makes him have an accident? You still have Vance and the Fascists of Project 2025 holding the power gavel.

That is the scenario you are looking at. And lies and deceit are going to be in there full time. That is certain.

I do not know for sure Rancid. Many other people in fascist regimes tried to do that. And the thing was...fear. And not wanting to rock that boat. The first thing authoritarian states with police states do is take away your security.

If you get really fanatical people in there? They won't be satisfied with letting the worker bees alone.

After all if they scapegoated the undocumented people? For taking away American jobs, and fine the employers for not hiring real Americans? Who are going to fill thos jobs now?

Prison labor and forced labor forces. How to get that going and still make a profit? The new courts and law enforcement with new impunity mandates. Fill the prisons with Black men, Latino men, especially the uppity ones who used to remind Dear Old Don of being so popular....like Obama. These ethnic minorities from shithole nations with high paying positions that that the liberals protected.

You are not dealing with logical people here. You never were. You are dealing with again. Cult like people and fanatics. Fear and lack of education. And also just people who want to have good secure jobs and the billionaire liars are going to be the ones to make sure the economy is sound now. Making sure the supply of cheap and forced labor is well supplied.

Never underestimate the mind of haters and racists Rancid. I never do. Ever.

I am glad I am in Mexico Rancid. I truly am. ;)

When things get dire for the poeple of the USA...and the billionaires are in charge of the DOGE and people look for that platform to know how to feel....no matter how dire it gets Rancid...

You do the Dire Straits song...

You still do not understand it Hakeer.

And since this thread is about the US elections of 2024? Let us focus on that.

They swept the House, the Senate, the SCOTUS, and hundreds of federal judge positions. They are going to staff thousands of posts with loyalists who's only job is going to be make sure the ones in that core of fascists get their agenda done as well as possible.

The liberals are going to have to stop with the excuses about why they never got working class policies in a broad way done. Why the message was not clear about speaking to the pain of the working people. They had so many opportunities to rectify. They folded.

If they continue to stubbornly think that being soft on these hardcore fascist pro capitalists with a professional liar as the head of the apparatus, is going to work and they will retake the White House and the Senate, and the House, with a lack of a very hard position and with real commitment to working people...they are going to fail again, and again. They will not see any openings without giving up on trying to be self centered and thinking that the kind of capitalism they have grown in the USA does not need changes.

It needs changes.

The rest of the world is moving along.

Now, is there a solution to this mess? Yes. Is it peaceful? That is the big question. That window is really over by now. The Peaceful stuff is gone. The Democratic party is still playing by rules that the MAGA ones have burned. You can only have peaceful transitions of power when both parties play by the same rules. The MAGA group does not play by those rules. Remember the three rules Trump plays by taught to him by Roy Cohn. Attack, attack, attack, never admit defeat.

because they are not going to respond to democracy. They despise it. They told you why they despise it. The man has been worshipping dictators all this time.

Why are we having discussions?

Are you ready to hear his incoherent speeches full of insane references to Hannibal Lecter and fallatio and so on and so forth for the next four years that could turn into him being in a wheelchair at age 99 still in the White House Rancid?

I have moved on. I refuse to watch that man give his insane blubberings on TV anymore. Watch a nature show in Mexico and you have peace of mind.

DOGE has no money or power. It looks like a vehicle to justify schedule F. That or its a way to sideline Musk. The two egos are going to clash eventually.

John Thune was elected Senate Majority Leader. The old GOP is still in control of the Senate.

Musk will be in charge of deregulation recommends. His company has $15 billion in federal contracts. Conflict of interest is obvious. This “department” Will end in 18 months, but the damage will be done by then. With all this “efficiency”, the federal deficit will be even more than last time.
