Inspired by HiFo's "Today In History" thread, what important historical things have occured on the date of your joining?

My date of "December 22, nothing notable appears to have happened in the year I joined except for the death of some Filipino writer, Adrian Cristobal. It is acceptable to post events from other years, but you don't need to post everything. Just the interesting stuff.
