The popular view of the invasion of France is that the French gave up without a fight; the truth is rather different. Following the initial surprise of the German tactics, which left the British Expeditionary Force surrounded at Dunkirk, French resistance strengthened. In the six week campaign 92,000 Frenchmen gave their lives for their country.
