Science comes from innovation which in turn comes from political openness. China had been lagging behind in science after the West opened up very much because of its lack of political openness, especially after 1368.

No matter how it wants to innovate, it won't go far because researchers will sooner or later find themselves in trouble.

This article fails to address this problem and thus does not reflect the truth.

This is politically relevant insofar as the looming yellow peril cloud hangs over the head of American exceptionalism so wat do? Wat do n.a.o?

I am not sure how you draw any conclusions that Beijing moves further as the global science capital from that article. Also Patrickov kinda brings up valid points why China has and will have problems.

China has made decent progress in the last 20-30 years. Current XI moves with more opression are going to destroy all that in the end though or at least damage any further progress.

As a former Yugoslav, you do feel resentment towards the West Igor, but do not forget. You are living in the West now and it is ultimately Western culture and Western ideas that let you have your good way of life. It was Western Court system that allow you to defend your rights and your land in Australia etc. I am not sure why you are happy about somebody not having those rights.

The Nature Index is compiled from 82 English science journals such as Nature and Cell, which is unfair to non-English speaking countries. But Beijing still beats New York in the total number of articles in the Nature Index journals, which is significant regardless of Beijing's advantage in pooling resources. It is not easy to get your article published in Nature and its equivalent, which is a badge of honor for researchers. Asian researchers are often accused of forging or manipulating scientific data to overcome the high hurdles or it may be a common practice. This is especially evident in life sciences and photos are easily doctored.

The Nature Index is a database of author affiliations and institutional relationships. The Index tracks contributions to research articles published in 82 high-quality natural-science journals, chosen by an independent group of researchers.

The Nature Index provides absolute and fractional counts of article publication at the institutional and regional level and, as such, is an indicator of global high-quality research output and collaboration. Data in the Nature Index are updated regularly, with the most recent 12 months made available under a Creative Commons licence at natureindex.com. The database is compiled by Nature Research.

The Nature Index uses Count and Share to track research output. A city, region or institution is given a Count of 1 for each article that has at least one author from that city, region or institution. This is the case regardless of the number of authors an article has, and it means that the same article can contribute to the Count of multiple regions or institutions.

To glean a city’s, a region’s or an institution’s contribution to an article, and to ensure they are not counted more than once, the Nature Index uses Share, a fractional count that takes into account the share of authorship on each article. The total Share available per article is 1, which is shared among all authors under the assumption that each contributed equally. For instance, an article with 10 authors means that each author receives a Share of 0.1. For authors who are affiliated with more than one institution, the author’s Share is then split equally between each institution. The total Share for an institution is calculated by summing the Share for individual affiliated authors. The process is similar for cities and regions, although complicated by the fact that some institutions have overseas labs that will be counted towards host region totals.

Adjusted Share accounts for the small annual variation in the total number of articles in the Nature Index journals. It is arrived at by calculating the percentage difference in the total number of articles in the Index in a given year relative to the number of articles in 2019 and applying this adjustment to Share values.
