How would the two meet up? Capitalism has been pretty good at making personal ownership of the means of production decline as the majority of the capital will become concentrated in the hands of the few.

The MoP is concentrated in the hands of those that make a point of investing in it and not in the hands of those that spend their surpluses down the pub getting hammered. At some point you have to flush out the ideological crap with which marxists programmed you and live in the real world. It is almost a given that the trend towards automation will continue and that AI and robotics could well see all sorts of economic functions hitherto safely dominated by human labour flipped over to the machine. That doesn't necessarily mean just selling labour will become totally unviable as an economic activity but it does mean at the very least as a hedge, diversifying into ownership of MoP rather than just selling labour is a smart thing to do. An example, I'm a taxi driver currently and there is some talk of driverless cars becoming a reality, it might take another ten years for the tech to mature but as it does more and more driving jobs will be performed by automatic control systems rather than human drivers. What to do? Most people will do nothing, they will say it will never catch on and keep saying that until it puts them out of a job. What they should do is see the writing on the wall and start putting their surpluses into shares of companies doing driverless tech or other productive enterprises so that when their paycheck gets made redundant by a machine at least they will still have something. Don't fight the trend, use it.

Off hand I can't think of any sci-fi that offers an approximate vision similar to mine. Ghost in the Shell maybe, if you re-imagine Motoko's collective as a non-gov org.

Should I shun all worldly pleasures, connections and obligations before I enlist?

Well it will probably be some time before the Order has a space faring capability so don't sweat it too much. First thing is to build up a solid technical and economic base which might take a few decades.

A rough sketch of the hierarchy:
King -> Captain -> Knight -> Squire

King: overall head of order
Captain: veteran knight entrusted with a high level of responsibility over resources.
Knight: has demonstrated some personal excellence and made a firm commitment of loyalty to the order.
Squire: general helper - training for knighthood


Considerations of admission:

Your genetic heritage doesn't matter: the order does not care if you are a ginger minger, have the sickle cell or single eyelids.
Your gender doesn't matter: male, female or undecided, no problem.
Your sexuality doesn't matter much: straight or homo is acceptable provided you are not obsessive or dishonourable in your conduct. Vow breakers are not wanted. If you are into really weird stuff such as animals, corpses or children, then seriously consider suicide, the Order does not want you.

Your ideology matters a lot: those afflicted with a slave-cult ideology such as Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Scientology, Marxism, Socialism are not acceptable until an oath can be sworn to the effect that they are no longer a follower.
Atheism, Buddhism, Shinto, Daoism, Paganism, general purpose mysticism are all acceptable. Maybe Sikhs and Hindus too.
