First we don't defend them, just back them. But traditional values--actually mainly shared democracy--is part of the basis of the policy. But the main part is the enormous clout of domestic pro-Israel fanatics--mainly but not entirely jews.
Sure, the jews are the backbone of the policy. But you should see the quotes of christian screwballs in Walt and Mearsheimer's The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. I once heard some TX christian say the "jews are a holy race" and opposing them will bring down the "wrath of god."

Why is support for Israel much stronger in liberal but Jew-rich states (e.g.New York) than in Christian but Jew-poor states (e.g. deep south)?
