I really think rock-n-roll had a more subversive role on the Soviet Union than the visual arts, but whateves.
Funny how Hitler, Stalin, J Edgar Hoover, Roger Scruton, religious fundamentalists of all persuasions, and the majority of conservatives were/are united in their hatred of 'modern art' or 'degenerate art' as the Nazis called it. Also, American conservatives were preaching that modern art/music was a communist plot to subvert the pure christian morals of our youth - just proves that they were all, fundamentally, conservative and that they all wanted to put and end to the one thing that sets humans apart from animals - creativity and progress. It's the age old struggle between the established order and the new worldview. Conservative vs Liberal.
This has been going on since Whistler sued Ruskin after Ruskin claimed his paintings were worthless smears of paint. Ruskin said that he had never seen “anything so impudent on the walls of any exhibition - absolute rubbish, and which had taken about a quarter of an hour to scrawl or daub – it had no pretense to be called painting.”
This is the 'offending' painting...Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket
Ruskin preferred painting such as Rossetti's - The Girlhood of Mary Virgin
Yes, modern art is ambiguous, get over it.
“Intolerance of ambiguity is the mark of an authoritarian personality.” - Theodor W. Adorno
Personally, I love (I live for) all kinds of art. Modern art, the Pre-Raphaelites, Whistler, Warhol - I love it all. If someone said I could never visit a museum or gallery for the rest of my life, I really think I would just die of sorrow.
