I woke up, and if you are anything like my odd self, you too awake with theme and words sloshing about in your mind. It occurred this morning, again, another song that I had not heard in a very long time playing its melody in my mind. Today it was Green Day's Wake me up when September ends. Note that I only listened to Dookie (album), beyond that I really don't like the band- Green Day. Yet, I woke up with new meaning to that September song. I'm sure you can predict how it is I translated it, but I'll get to that. The point of this thread is to place songs and interpret their meanings.
I guess this particular song isn't that special and it was written to ease the mourning period the lead singer was going through with his father passing. I now appreciate it a whole lot more with its new meaning... In tears when I listen now... especially when I'm in an all-American drunken stupor.

"Wake Me Up When September Ends"
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends
: Liberty in a loving world can never last and its season is over, so wake me up after the events of September eleventh conclude.
like my fathers come to pass
seven years has gone so fast
wake me up when September ends
:Like the founding fathers that come to pass, any amount of time can go so fast. Once again wake me up when September ends.
here comes the rain again
falling from the stars
drenched in my pain again
becoming who we are
: Here comes the weapons of destruction again, the planes hitting the steel, the falling of the towers and the shedding of our stars/stripes. We are now drenched in the consequences forcing the United States to become who we are, now.
as my memory rests
but never forgets what I lost
wake me up when September ends
: The thoughts are too painful to carry, thus they need rest. Still, we never shall forget the freedoms we lost. Someone wake us up after this nightmare ends.
summer has come and passed
the innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends
ring out the bells again
like we did when spring began
wake me up when September ends
: Before the season of liberty in a loving world, ring out the bells that represent its coming. Possibly a reference to the independence bell

wake me up when September ends
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
wake me up when September ends

wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
wake me up when September ends
Lastly, I wish Johnny cash woulda covered this song and lowered its octave. It could of been powerful behind a backdrop of the American flag and that fateful day on September eleventh.
