Why did he suffer so much and why did he feel so deeply?

What drove this man?

It seems he was tormented by a tremendous inner anguish.

But what was the cause of it? Was it the loss of Russia to modernity?

Basically, yes. I think his poem Soviet Russia sums it up. The traditional peasant society in which he had grown up and with which he identified was going to be swept away, and he knew this was inevitable.

Was this torment what led him to drink heavily and engage in self-destructive behaviour?
