I never understood this irrational prejudice towards Latinos. Most Latinos have family values, work hard, and pay a shit ton in taxes that Americans benefit from. Most of the Latinos who pay into the system never see that money again and do not get to benefit from it. You always hear about Texas complaining about their border problems but you never hear about California complaining about it. California is a border state too. They get a lot of people from Latin American countries just like Texas. So why is there this difference in complaint level in Texas as opposed to California?

Texas is run by ex Southerners because Texas used to be a slave owning pro Confederacy state.

Texas has a unique history. The reality is that both California and Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, part of Colorado, Nevada and part of Utah were part of a loose coalition of states belonging to Mexico. President Polk had a bee in his bonnet for California. Most of California already had the land parceled out to Californios who were part of Mexico. That is why there are two Mexican states with California in their names. Baja California Norte. Baja California Sur. Most of the land titles were part of the original El Camino Real that were Franciscan Missions established by the Spanish and the Mexican Roman Catholic Church. The names say it all. San Diego (St James), Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles (Our Lady of the Angels), Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Santa Ana, Sacramento (the Sacrament) San Francisco (St Francis) etc. Polk wanted California for the gold found there but also to unite the US through both oceans. The Atlantic on the East Coast and the Pacific on the West Coast. It also was a very wealthy land. They then did a bunch of thievery. The US government invalidated most of the titles that were in Spanish and in Los Angeles County they burned a lot of the original documents. To have European and settlers take over from the old Californios.

There were a lot of bad moves. Many Californians who spoke Spanish before California became a state in 1849 wanted to have a better situation than they had with Mexico City. And advocated for breaking away from Mexico. But? They did not count on greedy squatters flowing in from the Southern states and later on post American Civil War. Favoring the newcomers and undermining old land rights.

Now it is ironic that the ones who moan and complain about illegal aliens invading their nation? Have deeper roots in that land than any of those Johnny Come Latelys looking greedily for land and gold.
