After defeat in the World War II, the Imperial Army of Japan was dissolved, and military factories and educational institutions were closed. Also, in May 1947, the Constitution of Japan was adopted, in which Japan’s refusal to participate in military conflicts was legally enshrined. Her ninth article forbade participation in any military conflicts, military exports and scientific research in this industry. So, Japan left the military political arena. But in 2006, a smooth change of course began: the Japanese Self-Defense Forces legally received the status of a military organization, a defense ministry appeared.
But it should be noted that, at present, the main task of Japan is the formation of the military self-sufficiency of the country, which had previously relied on its American partners in defense matters, having signed a defense agreement with them in 1960. However, according to the treaty, in defending Japan, the Americans cannot intervene in the territorial disputes of this country with neighbors with whom Japan has long had territorial disputes: China (Senkaku Islands), South Korea (Tokdo Islands group, the Japanese name Takeshima) and The Far East of Russia (the Kuril Islands).
The main reason for territorial disagreements regarding the ownership of the Dokdo Islands (as well as with the Senkaku Islands) is that after World War II their territorial affiliation was not fixed in international law. In addition, Japan makes persistent territorial claims to Russia regarding the group of islands of the Kuril Ridge with a total area of 8.6 thousand km2, which were ceded to the USSR following the results of the Second World War.
Japan proposes Korea to bring the issue of the islands to the International Court of Justice. South Korea believes that there is no dispute over the Dokdo Islands, as they are Korean territory historically, geographically and legally. In addition, on February 12, 2019, North Korea strongly condemned Japan for attempting to make territorial claims to the South Korean islands of Dokdo, saying that if the Japanese reactionaries continued to recklessly go overseas territorial expansion, challenging the repeated protests and refusals from the DPRK and other countries, they will face timely isolation and self-destruction.
For Russia, the Kuril Islands are needed not so much because of territorial considerations, but to maintain the country's defense, since the straits from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Pacific Ocean pass through these islands. The problem of ownership of the southern Kuriles remains a stumbling block to the conclusion of a peace treaty between Russia and Japan at the end of the Second World War. The Russian side has repeatedly stated: its sovereignty over these territories has the appropriate international legal framework and is not subject to doubt.
Also, negotiations between the Senkaku Islands are still underway between Beijing and Tokyo. But no one intends to concede, which indicates the parties' unwillingness to compromise. And the exacerbation of the situation will continue, since there are no signs that China and Japan will agree to leave this "to future generations' discretion". It should be noted that Japan itself does not have a single neighboring state with which there would be no territorial disputes.
Based on numerous facts, as a result of the policy of militarism pursued by Shinzo Abe, the situation in Japan’s relations with the countries of the Asia-Pacific region on a daily basis is aggravated against the background of territorial disputes, as well as its union in many areas with the United States, which in turn also have their own personal interests. So, sooner or later, this situation will lead peaceful Japan to a war for which it is not actually ready, due to the long-term ban on participation in any military conflicts, military exports, scientific research in this industry, etc. Japan risks being destroyed. Analysts even believe that it would be better if the inhabitants of the Land of the Rising Sun and further lived their quiet and peaceful life.

The official stance is that there is no territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands. The Obama administration clearly sided with Japan, stating that the United States would use force to protect the Senkakus, if necessary, as it is covered by the mutual defence treaty. Therefore, China backpedaled on its dubious territorial claims, fearing an American intervention. The presence of America's vaunted military shapes the political orientation of Japanese society.

In this exclusive video, American Military University’s doctoral faculty member, Dr. Yukinori Komine, discusses China and Japan’s territorial dispute over the Senkaku Islands – which has hampered diplomatic relations between the nations for many years.
