Russia continues to strengthen the defense of its Kuril Islands, which Japan brassily calls its "northern territories" and cannot reconcile with the outcome of the war, leaving no hope of returning their jurisdiction. The government of Russian President Vladimir Putin, of course, has absolutely no plans to transfer the islands to Japan, since the territory of the Kuril Islands is originally Russian. However, Russia, as largest military power country, also pays great attention to the defense of its territory and its borders. Therefore, against the background of the tense situation on the Kuril issue, the relevance of the defense of the islands remains.

So, on April 8, 2019 it became known that on Kamchatka and on the islands of the Kuril Ridge, separate detachments armed with drones were deployed. Unmanned aerial vehicles will patrol the coastal and near-sea zone, as well as help the marines and all-arms formations. The Russian publisher "Izvestia" reported that the 18th machine-gun and artillery division, stationed on the islands of the Kuril ridge Iturup and Kunashir, would receive the "Orlan-10" UAG with a radius of action up to 120 km, which have established itself in Syria, and to Kamchatka would send a drone longer range.

On April 9, 2019, the Japanese government made a protest about this by means of a phone call to the Russian embassy in Tokyo, believing that "this is unacceptable and contrary to our position on the four northern islands". But the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, in turn, said earlier that Russian diplomats would not accept protests from Japan over events in the southern part of the Kuril Islands, made in the form of telephone calls from diplomats of the embassy, because they contradict the accepted forms of diplomatic communication.

On April 11, at a briefing in Moscow, the director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, made a comment on this matter and described the revanchism of the mood of the Japanese leadership, which makes Russia claim its livelihoods in the Kuril Islands. According to her words, Moscow has repeatedly indicated Tokyo that such demarches are unacceptable and are generally regarded as interference in the internal affairs of the Russian Federation.

Also, M. Zakharova stressed that Russia has all the legal rights "to organize any activities on its own territory, including in order to strengthen the national defenses". And the Russian Defense Ministry recalled that Russia has the right to use any kind of arms and weapons at any point in its sovereign territory.

According to the Mainichi newspaper, Japan abandoned its original plan to reach a framework agreement with Russia on a peace treaty by June, including resolving the territorial issue. Probably the issue will be postponed to next year or later and we can live without a peace treaty between the two great powers in the Far East. This cold war framework serves right for the interests of America as well, further solidifying Japan's ties with the United States by seeing Russia as an archvillain.
