As it is known, the Korean Peninsula remains a source of instability and a potential hotbed of tension in the Asia-Pacific region. This is due to the continuing military-political and ideological confrontation between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the Republic of Korea.

It's not a secret that Washington is adding fuel to the fire in this conflict, which seeks to influence the solution of all problems in the region and which is destabilized in the Asia-Pacific region. The United States, as the main ally of the Republic of Korea, after the Korean War gained the opportunity to deploy its military bases in this territory. At the moment, the territory of the Republic of Korea have 28.5 thousand US troops stationed in various parts of the Korean Peninsula. Formally, the purpose of the US staying in Korea, as well as in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, is to ensure peace and stability, but in fact, to maintain military control in the region.

Washington is clearly not benefiting from the warming in relations between Seoul and Pyongyang, and is determined to prevent this. For the United States, North Korea is most likely needed as a kind of scarecrow in order to maintain and increase its military presence in the region, to promote its national interests there and to develop a missile defense system, thereby restraining China and Russia, on whose borders the DPRK is so successfully located. Therefore, the United States needs to maintain the tense situation on the Korean Peninsula, and the normalization of inter-Korean relations and the reduction of tension in the region do not correspond to American strategic interests.

By conducting several joint military drills a year, the United States and the Republic of Korea worth recalling that as soon as the US and South Korean military begin to maneuver, Pyongyang immediately launches its missiles. The latest example was in August 2019: when the United States and South Korea began their annual summer joint military drills, North Korea launched two missiles, warning the allies to stop the drills.

It is known that at the end of November 2019, the next large-scale military drills of the United States and Republic of Korea were planned. North Korea opposed the maneuvers, warning of «an unmatched punishment» which the US will not be able to handle if the drills begin as planned. The United States and South Korea decided to postpone the drills to December to support the process of building relations with the DPRK. But, the DPRK leadership requires the United States to permanently stop conducting these drills. According to Pyongyang, the drills postponement to a later date will not ensure peace and security on the Korean peninsula.

It is worth noting that not only joint exercises cause concern in the DPRK. As we know, the United States seeks to increase the number of its military contingent in the Asia-Pacific region, in the same South Korea, where the American missile defense system was deployed not long ago, in connection with which the number of American troops on the Korean peninsula increased. Moreover, the Pentagon is increasing the number of its troops in Japan. American warships move freely in the waters of the Asia-Pacific region. These facts speak about the escalation of the situation in the already not calm region.

Thus, undoubtedly, the North Korean leadership understands the peculiarity of the situation in their country and strives to have an effective nuclear shield that will allow it to counter external threats. After another round of tensions between the United States and the DPRK, it became clear that the nuclear program was the only way to effectively defend it.

The United States, by building up its military potential in the region, is contributing to the growth of tension both on the Korean Peninsula and in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, while drawing the Asia-Pacific countries into an arms race, moreover, nuclear weapons. And under the guise of protecting peace and stability in the region, Washington uses both the Republic of Korea and the DPRK as pawns in a big geopolitical game. Until Washington gets rid of its «hostile policy» regarding the DPRK, which is the main cause of the nuclear issue on the Korean peninsula, it is premature to speak about the peninsula's denuclearization.
