Here's a statistic that may be surprising to some people.
The Japanese have a reputation of having a high suicide rate, but actually the suicide rate in Japan is lower than the suicide rate for white Americans in the US.

Very good news for the Japanese that their rates have dropped -- we would have been lower than them in 2012. But not really that much lower, even then.

I am honestly a bit surprised by these numbers.

The South Korean suicide rate is at 24.7 in 2018, but it is worth noting that for Korean men it is 38.5 and for Korean women it is 14.8 (Donga Ilbo).

I guess it means 14.2 % per 100,000. I was too lazy to write the whole paragraph from the quote. It is confusing because some online articles add % after the suicide rate, while it is actually the number of deaths per 100,000 total population.

The suicide rate edged down to 16% per 100,000, a dip of 0.5% from the previous year and also the lowest in history. By contrast, the suicide rate for the United States, which has more than twice Japan’s population and a growing suicide problem, was 14.2% in 2018.

According to the summary on Wikipedia, it is 14.3 suicides per 100,000 people, ranking Japan at 30 around the world, and 4th in Asia, after Kazakhstan, South Korea and India.
