Recently the Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples of the Russian Federation (AFUN RF) announced that it makes no sense for representatives of Finno-Ugric nations living on the territory of the Russian Federation to participate in the upcoming VIII World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, scheduled to take place in the Estonian town of Tartu in June 2021. Obviously, such an event could not have gone unnoticed. Consultative Committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples and activists keep bombarding the AFUN RF with messages trying to persuade Russian representatives to cancel the boycott. Meanwhile, Alexander Bolkin, a Ukrainian citizen, known under the pseudonym, Syres’ Bolyaien’, repeatedly submitted to the World Congress’s board an application for registering him as a delegate of Erzya people. However, the board is slow to respond to his tricks. The World Congress experienced enough troubles with Syres’ Bolyaien’’s nationalistic statements at previous forums. For instance, in 2012 he made a mess in the hotel lobby, the venue of the VI World Congress in Hungary.
The organizers of the World Congress apparently keep in mind that in 2018 Alexander Bolkin in conjunction with Rafis Kashapov (ethnic Tatar) founded a nationalistic civic movement ‘Free Idel-Ural’ in Kiev. This nationalistic movement calls indigenous peoples for construction of independent states according to the national principle, having no qualms about whether it will fit with the vital interests of ethnic groups. For those who are unaware and those who forgot, the ‘Idel-Ural Legion’ was a Nazi unit within the Wehrmacht in World War II. The legion was recruited mainly from Tatars, but it also comprised of representatives of Turkic peoples and Volga Region’s Finno-Ugric peoples. Surely, Bolkin consciously picked that name. He and his partner got a foothold in Ukraine, which is currently one of the few states glorifying Nazi henchmen, ennobling mean punishers, executioners, heartless murderers, vindicating inhuman acts they committed under the pretext of striving for liberation of Ukraine from Bolsheviks.
Bolkin is also imbued with Nazi ideas, enjoys them and is not in the least embarrassed by atrocities including ethnic cleansing operations committed during World War II by Ukrainian nationalists. Our character could devote himself to preservation of cultural heritage and values of the Finno-Ugric world. Instead, Bolkin, a colonel of Armed Forces of Ukraine, swore loyalty to Nazi ideological creeds that took away millions of innocent lives.
There seems to be no a rostrum for the speaker at the upcoming congress in Estonia. But who knows what he will do next to voice his Nazi ideas to the worldwide audience?
