I think Findeton raises some excellent points. The UN has its place as an advisory body and a forum for international debate, which is great for encouraging peaceful settlements, but as you point out it is hardly democratic. I really don't see the UN as it is currently organised as an institution which should be entrusted with a lever of power as potentially coercive as a standing army...

And welcome to the boards, Findeton. I'm new here too... :) And your English is fine...

If this UN Army does exist what language would it speak? What would the pay be like? Would it be high enough to attract quality leadership or so low only Russian soldiers stay in it? Where would the officers be trained to run this Army? I suppose you would just use the existing officer corp of the combine French Russian and Canadian army's. Then what weapons do you arm them with? American and French 5.56 or Russian 7.62? The Russians have plenty of weapons but there of very low quality or do you use American weaponry and refit Russia's army? At that what nation is going to agree to give out its weapons secrets? Do you think the US is going to give out its Abrams tank secrets to this newly formed NATO army because Canada wants to leave the holy trinity? The shear logistical side of creating this newly formed army would cost so much just to initially form, that you could of waged 10 Iraq wars with it. Then what of the quality of the soldiers? Will these soldiers fight and die for the UN? Each of these countries brings its own set of friends with them making it difficult to get a 100% agreement on going to war with other nations.

I think the idea would be very hard to accomplish but I do like the idea of the Canadians getting out of NATO by 2010. Especially if this means I no longer have to train with those sub-standard soldiers.

Old post, but I didn't see it when it was first made so I'll weigh in anyway...

No one would want to make Qatzel's UN Army. Since we know the goal of Qatzel's UN Army is to fight the US, you're going to have a hard time getting enough volunteers to go along with it. Contrary to the direction world opinion is headed in, you're not going to find a great deal of people that want to actually take up arms against the US. Secondly, they'd know it's doomed to fail. Unless they could work as a cohesive unit (they couldn't) all of Europe would have an extremely difficult time fighting the US, which is more technologically advanced, experienced, wealthy, and cohesive.

You'd have to hope that countries like Russia and China jump in with the UN for it to be a fight, or that by some form of magic these nations develop an effective system of managing their huge military.

I endorse this plan - it will make it easier for me to convince my countrymen to leave the organization of world socialism that is the United Nations.

This simply isn't true. The UN army would fight all imperialism and power abuse by any large state.

And it would protect the economic and social models of small countries like Yugoslavia and Nicaragua against foreign business interference and superpower "power vacuum - filling" behavior, thus protecting several different economic and social models against the world's Wal-Mart states like the US and Russia, where foreign policy is basically a steamroller of one-size-fits-all hegemony.

The UN was a US idea. It might have been an idealistic rebirth of a better and bigger League of Nations :p but quickly became cover for dubious US policy. The US pays for it and hosts it obviously they expect it to do their bidding.
I think a UN army is a very foolish idea especially if you are Canadian.A UN army without the US,Canada would become the new frontline.

The UN was a US idea.

No one in any other countries ever thought that world unity would be a good idea?

Isn't the copyrighting of History something that a united world should be discouraging?

wiki wrote:From August to October 1944, representatives of France, the Republic of China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the USSR met

Franklin D. Roosevelt first suggested using the name United Nations to refer to the wartime Allies[1].

When has the UN had anything to do with unity. The US consistently vetoes any resolution against its interests and blackmails many of the weaker nations economically and militarily. The weaker nations might have believed they would gain a voice but to suggest that the US might listen is a bit naive.
If your improved UN sans USA announced sanctions against the US would the US take any notice I don't think so.If they then threatened military action the tanks would be in downtown Toronto the day after.
