One could argue that to only pursue profit is harmful to other people. True capitalism is like a big game of monopoly where eventually only one person "wins" and everybody else loses- thus "harming" everyone else in the process. When this is done in politics or governing bodies, many people are hurt in larger numbers. Taking food off of someone's table for your profit is about as harmful as it gets. Also, this idea of pushing values is not unique to liberals, and in fact is more applicable to conservatives who fight against different ideas like slavery, women's voting rights, civil liberties and religious ideals. Strangely, the pure pursuit of profit is unsustainable, which goes against one of the major functions of conservatism- stability in society.
