People always make the choice that they think is in their best interest, in my view.
Exactly. And what most people believe is in their self-interest is the same as what a dog might. If you can't kill it, run. If you can kill it or it's already dead, eat it.

A liberal's self interest at least makes an attempt to transcend this inclination long enough to visualize a possible alternative.

Conservatives believe this behavior to be a waste of time. They call anyone who seriously considers alternatives, loony liberals. Liberals have just arrived at the point they can stop apologizing for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Well, almost.
