The fork is held in the left hand, the knife in the right to cut food and to help carry food to the fork. The fork is held, tines down, and the knife used to move food onto the fork or support food so the fork can pick it up. There is no shifting of cutlery.

Heyyy, for a lefty I do handle knife and fork the right way. It feels weird for me to use a knife in my left hand. I even use the computer mouse with my right hand, only met one lefty who has to use the mouse with his left hand.

My point is that wearing make up was apparently a status symbol for men at that time (the scenes are from a Kubrick movie so I presume they are historically accurate).

Why? They are professionals who wear makeup. Unless you want to say they put gunk on so that the lighting does not make them look washed out.
