NPR did an interview with Ramita Navai about her documentary "Afghanistan Undercover". (August 2022)

You can find a transcript of the interview here:
'Afghanistan Undercover' details the Taliban's mistreatment of women and girls : NPR
https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1115557473

Things are getting really terrible for women in Afghanistan, but it has not been getting much attention in the media.
This is probably due to two factors: (1) The conflict in Ukraine has distracted attention away from Afghanistan. (2) The media is reluctant to report about what's going on in Afghanistan because it could make President Biden look bad. (The pullout of American forces was a decision made by Biden. And besides human interest stories about women's rights are not something conservative media usually reports about. Conservative media also has much less funding to be able to investigate things going on in other countries, and in any case the worldview of conservatives tends to be less global)

A short summary of the interview, the Taliban are abducting girls and young women into forced marriages with Taliban fighters. There is evidence that provincial Taliban commanders are complicit in this. It's dangerous for young women to even show their faces in public, because some Taliban member might find them attractive and want to marry them. Even if they do cover up in the burka, there are spies, and if a neighbor sees her, he might report that there is an attractive unmarried girl who lives there, and it could attract the attention of Taliban members looking to take a bride. Taliban members are also kidnapping brides from the distant provinces in places where young women are not abiding by the rules and wearing the burka.

Err ... nobody in the media ever gave the slightest hint of a fraction of really anything about women rights in Afghanistan.

Women rights was just one of the covers to justify an endless war.

Now the war is over, they dont care about Afghanistan. Full stop. They didnt even reported about the danger of famine. So why would they give two shits about women rights ?
#15242347
@Puffer Fish No one is ignoring it. They knew this was going to happen when they left Afghanistan.

What is your solution? Invade Afghanistan again? :?:

If the Taliban were only raping them, you probably wouldn't have a problem with it. :knife:

The country has the highest children per woman rate in the region, in last 20 Years their population doubled. They need contraceptions and 1 child policy.

Famine is caused by overpopulation and fanatic taliban rules like destroying opuim fields and methproduction. Drugs are the countries only exports and in the high mountainous dessert nothing else you can grow.

In autocrat-ruled countries there is currently a tendency to go back centuries when it comes to basic human rights, or constitutions.

Such extreme veils like the Burkha never existed before in history, according Quran a woman has to wear modest cloths.

Chomeini introduced mandatory veils, since then is a veil a religous symbol.

No they don't! They've had war. That kills off people, especially males. 1 Child policies are suicidal for a nation. China showed how bad it was. Their birthrate is 4.3, which isn't too bad(or even unknown) for a country that is developing and had almost perpetual war.

You don't want what is good for the people or country, do you? :eh:

Famine is very rarely caused by overpopulation, but by people controlling food distribution as a way to retain power.

The Taliban burning opium fields and meth production is better is excellent. These things don't help people. They are a bane on a society. Saying drugs are the only things they can grow is showing a lot of ignorance, too.

Thailand used to have a region that grew mostly drugs(part of the Golden Triangle). They changed it to grow other things and then the wealth of the people grew immensely. Drugs are not big money-makers for farmers, and you can't subsist on them.

You can thank the West for the religious extremism in the ME.

Social instability is caused by a large rapidly growing young demographic. Especially when there is no economy to employ them. Most turn to extremism. Not sure if the Taliban is strong enough to contain this. It can be contained in India because the Indian state is powerful enough to squash such movements. In Afghanistan ISIS will simply see more recruits since the Taliban are seen as the moderates/establishment. Extremists flock to the fringes.

Throwing women's rights struggles into the mix is kind of comical. Afghanistan has bigger problems. It's now a choice between the Taliban 'moderates' and ISIS.

@Godstud I have no compassion for people who suffer hunger but have too many children. The worldwide UN-Food program should end, instead should be contraceptions distributed. China has proven one child policy works or else they would be an overpopulated like India (some indian cities have also introduced one child policy).

The Americans did not burn oppium fields... guess why?

Thailand has mass tourism, who wants to spend vacations in a mountainous dessert???

Thailand mass tourism? Well, Thailand is infamous for its sex tourism.

It changed because the drugs were being grown where better crops could be grown. Food crops were more profitable for the farmers and the people. Food crops could replace drug crops.

Switzerland has tourism, and is mountainous, as well. Every country can have tourism if it's safe enough.

So is Germany, Amsterdam, Vegas, and many other places where you can do the same thing. It's not "infamous", anymore than Vegas is infamous for gambling and cat-houses.

Robert Urbanek wrote:It used to be a pedophile paradise. Now it is rather a mass tourism destination.
Most countries had the same problems, including USA, UK, etc. USA still has child marriages. Best to remove the plank from your eye before talking about the splinter in someone else's.

Thailand is a mass tourist destination because the country isn't POOR any longer. It's now a generation ahead of the Philippines, which is another tourist destination in the region.

The fleshpots of Thailand were special enough to warrant a mention in the musical Chess. Then, of course, there was the case of actor David Carradine, who apparently died in 2009 from a sexual misadventure in a Bangkok hotel.

 Chess was in 1984... While you can still find the same things, it's not the same.

Carradine died from auto-asphyxiation. Could have happened anywhere. He was a freak!

Anyways, the topic is Afghanistan. They can grow something else, aside from poppies if they want to prosper.

@Godstud Afghanistan has many resources :

Afghanistan is rich in resources like copper, gold, oil, natural gas, uranium, bauxite, coal, iron ore, rare earths, lithium, chromium, lead, zinc, gemstones, talc, sulphur, travertine, gypsum and marble.

https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-paci ... d%20marble.

BTW: Bolivia has legalized coca farming and it exploits natural ressources.

Alija Izetbegovic, the founder of Bosnia said in a OIC meeting:" Without educated mothers, you will not have educated sons."

Yeah, sorry Godstud, child marriages are not necessarily wrong. The ethical issue is whether the girl is actually choosing it or not, without coercion.

In this story, with the Taliban in Afghanistan forcefully taking brides, that is clearly not the case.

WTF I would hang alll the parents, their groom, the priest, except the poor child.

The Conference of Islamabad 1979, where all highranking muslim clerics met, decided on the base of Quran the minimum age 16.

Just the Jihadis do not follow the Conference, which is comparable to its importance to a conciliar.

So you are not only a rape advocate, but a pedophile promoter. Thank you for confirming my suspicions.

Children cannot give consent. You know fuck, and all, about ethics or morality!
