I predict this will put a big additional strain on their water supply. Turing the desert green is going to use up a huge amount of water and lead to a lot of evaporation.

Reminds me of the big Soviet project that led to the Aral Sea drying up.

Egypt is already worried that Ethiopia, higher upstream the Nile River, will divert more of the water for themselves.

Hopefully the GERD doesn't cause conflict with Egypt in light of this new project. I know that Egypt threatened Ethiopia to some extent a few years ago if they filled the GERD with more water.
