@Rancid Early reports are saying cases in Texas and Florida appear to be starting to drop. However, it's too early to tell if it will be sustained.

Please do not take this as a snarky answer.

The answer is that it will not. The reason it will not is that these are both republican states in an election year where the president is pushing for reopening. So the actions that push down the numbers will be short lived and the numbers will climb again.

This is almost guaranteed because the republicans have put forward a bill that will gut the protections that keep people at home. So many will be forced to risk their own death and the death of their family to feed some twisted Republican need to feed special interests rather than care for the people. They will try to go back to work, the numbers will climb again and we will lose another 100K at least before the election.

So there is your answer.

Look at the 5 States with the highest death rates: New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. They are all Liberal Democrat strongholds with lots of shit hole sanctuary cities. Remember how Liberals told us that, stupid Trump supporters would be dying in droves. It was all a complete lie. It was all a complete bigoted slur. Look at West Virginia, the very heart of Trump country, the very heart of the resistance to Hilary's fake Green jobs agenda. The home of Katniss Everdean. 62 deaths per million compared to New Jersey's 1791.

This is the Xi virus, deliberately started by the National-Socialist Chinese Communist Party. This biological warfare attack was perpetrated to put down the opposition to the Communist Party's fascist rule in Wuhan and Hong Kong province, to attack the free West and undermine democracy and to stop Trump's re-election.

As I've said, so many liberals need to live in a fantasy world. Hence they like to call it the Trump virus. The idea that Trump is responsible for the level of deaths in New York or New Jersey is laughable. Only someone completely ignorant of how America's governmental system works could say that. But the idea that Trump is responsible for the deaths of people in the Muslim dominated shit hole ghettos of France or Belgium is beyond a joke.

Agence France-Presse wrote:Hong Kong drops restaurant dining ban after people forced to eat in streets

Hong Kong’s government has reversed a day-old ban on restaurants serving dine-in customers that was introduced to control the spread of coronavirus, following widespread public anger.

All restaurants in the city of 7.5 million were ordered to serve only takeaways from Wednesday as part of a raft of ramped-up social-distancing measures to combat a fresh wave of virus cases.

Social media were quickly swamped by photos of mostly blue-collar workers eating on pavements and parks – and even inside public toilets to escape a torrential downpour.

Restaurant groups with links to influential pro-Beijing parties also voiced dismay at the measures, which had been encouraged by epidemiologists to slow infections.

On Thursday, city authorities published new guidelines saying restaurants could operate dine-in facilities – but only during the day, at half capacity, and with no more than two people at a table. In the evenings they must stick to serving only takeaway meals.

The government said the suspension of dine-in meals had brought “inconvenience and difficulties”.

Hong Kong had been a poster child for tackling the virus, with local transmissions all but ended by early summer. But the virus has returned in recent weeks, brought in by tens of thousands of people who were exempt from a mandatory quarantine imposed on most arrivals.

They included international ship and airline crews, as well as business-people and senior officials travelling to mainland China.

More than 1,500 new infections have been detected since the start of July – half the total since the virus first hit the city in late January.

New daily infections have been above 100 for the past eight days, and the death toll has risen from seven to 24 this month.

Under coronavirus measures, all Hong Kongers must wear face masks outdoors and no more than two people can gather in public.

Many businesses, including bars and gyms, have been shuttered for most of July, while firms have been urged to let employees work from home.

Hong Kong has some of the world’s smallest apartments – and the most expensive. Some residents barely have a kitchen to cook in, making them reliant on cheap eateries.

Disclaimer: I have been bringing my own lunchbox for years. Even without the epidemic I only dine outside once every, say, few months.

The actual problem here is that the Government does not look carefully on the cause and effect of pushing the ordinance.

Also, their current primary mission is clearly something else.

The following discussion also has references that the current resurgence of epidemic is related to some pro-China celebrations:

This is a disingenuous claim. The states that got hit first were those with large populations, high population density and a lot of international travel such as New York and adjacent states. A big reason why the mortality rate is higher is that early on we had much less of an insight of how to approach the disease than we have now and because vulnerable populations got hit first.
Now the virus is raging many republican states such as Texas and Florida. The death rate is lower because we now have all the experience we acquired during Newyork, and because the affected population has been younger since we have done a better job shielding the elderly. I have family in assisted living facilities that have not allowed visitors for 6 months and residents are not allowed out either... think about that... some people are not seeing their moms, dads, grandmothers, grandfathers for 6 months and we still don't see an end to this! By the time this is over, we might have to do DNA tests to find out which old demented person belongs to us  .

How does this not describe Florida?

It might. The fact is, as far as we know the virus that hit NY came from Europe. I'll venture to say that NY has more connections to Europe than FL which might have more travel towards Latin America.
But you are mostly right, it could have started in FL... except it didn't. That doesn't change anything.

CDC Director Robert Redfield says that now there are more deaths from suicide than from Covid, he says there are also more deaths from drug overdoses than Covid deaths, particularly in High School.

From a webinar on 7/14/20.

It does lead to the question of why New York and not Florida. You’ve mentioned one possible partial answer, the level of contact with Europe. That could explain the difference in timing. What it doesn’t explain is the patterns after the Wuhan virus reached the two states.

Actually it does. The virus likely arrived in tiny packets. Probably just a handful of people originally and it spread from there exponentially. Whenever those few early people visited first (presumably Newyork for those that came from europe and California those that came from Asia) were the early hotspots. The rest of the states most likely received infections that came from within (nationally) and were more "lightly hit" because there was some degree of "shutdown" early on. But as memorial/independence day arrived, and protest began and people started relaxing rules of social distancing/etc, it spread in the rest of the states.
Mortality is just a function of who is getting infected and what we have learned towards treating these people.

You are correct, and most especially the age of those getting infected. Which means that we can expect at least temporary upticks in death rates in all states that reopen, whenever they reopen. And they can’t all stay closed forever, and the longer they wait the more damage they inflict on their economies.

Here is the deal, for as long as there are so many cases we cannot control the age/demographic of who gets infected. If we had a very low incidence rate, we could just try to cohort, isolate older and more at-risk individuals and try to play as such for a long time.
This haphazzard approach has been very damaging for business and individuals. If the goverment had approached this in an organized and disciplined manner, we could have controlled the outbreak. We know this because plenty other countries did it and simply because it is logic.
Instead we will be dealing with this shit for a long time. I know that every so often an article pops up to stroke the power of the vaccine and how it will fix the economy... it won't. Vaccines are a long time away and deploying them will be hard, and people are going to be skeptic about them (and/or political).
We are fucked

Describe a city in Florida as big and as dense and as reliant on public transport and that gets as many international flights as NYC.

Also, why should it matter if it is mainly old people and people with compromised immune systems who die?

No DrLee. Shutting down the economy was apparently what is being suggested as the solution to a relatively minor problem, in my view.

Fauci showed everyone how the virus is political. I very much enjoyed seeing this little smarmy runt in the hot seat. He got so flustered that at 4:34 he says "I don't have any scientific evidence of anything..." lol

Your view is worthless if not.
