Are sick people heroes? The media and the charity industry seem to think so, when you see headlines like:
Sick Children Become Fierce Heroes in Powerful Ad for Kids' Hospital
St. Jude Children Are My Heroes
Pete Carroll To Cancer Survivors: "You Guys Are All My Heroes"
Do you become a hero just because you suffered from a deadly disease? I usually think of a hero as someone who takes extraordinary action, even self-sacrifice, to save someone else, not themselves.
The word “hero” becomes devalued if anyone facing death, including those in old age, can be considered a hero.
HOMER: That Timmy is a real hero! LISA: How do you mean, Dad? HOMER: Well, he fell down a well, and... he can't get out. LISA: How does that make him a hero? HOMER: Well, that's more than you did!
