I know we have that modular technology but weapons proliferation and waste disposal make it problematic.

It is a mater of keeping it safe not a matter of it being "bad". Nuclear power is more cleaner than any other source that we have if the waste is handled properly. It is way better if we actually fund and build newer generation of reactors that will make the waste reusable by itself so the situation will become 20 times better. Why are we not funding this?

Environmentalist and the oil lobby did a wonderful job of scaring the shit out of everyone out of nuclear energy.

Agreed, and those two are rarely on the same team.

Though, an attempt at fiscal conservatism did coallesce with environmentalism in that french tax on fuel, but boy was that fucking stupid to do in a developed country where the poor and middle classes rely on automobiles to get to work. REAL dumb.

Can you imagine that shit going down here @Rancid? Austin would probably be burned to the ground.

I think it's because environmentalist were largely too stupid to even realize that big oil was in on killing nuclear. Had they been smart enough to realize this, they might not have fought nuclear so hard.

They never bothered to ask "Why is evil big oil on our side?" Actually, they were too stupid to even ask that.

Indeed, but really, if you tried this shit anywhere in the US, it might actually cause a civil war! After all, the US itself was founded over a tax dispute.

Yeah, they're not too bright, of all the lobbies they might be the most apt to being manipulated and exploited by corporate-interests and statists who want to justify more bureaucratic overreach, fees, and taxes. There are many lobbies that I believe are sincere even if I disagree with them, but the green lobby is not one of them.

This is why the only environmentalists I trust are ones with a libertarian or anarchist-bent. Like Joel Salatin. Guys who are into restorative agriculture as an empowering self-help entrepreneurial endeavor and a grass-roots movement for local reform.

Otherwise, they're probably shills.

I agree with this.

Joel Salatin sounds a little to close to Joe Stalin ----

And then subsequently , after becoming president ,George Washington himself led an armed force to suppress a tax revolt . < http://whiskeyrebellionfestival.com/festival/ , https://www.nps.gov/frhi/learn/historyc ... ellion.htm > It's interesting how things change once the one time revolutionaries become the new rulers , and are compelled to deal with their own civil unrest .

Yes, I remember learning about the Whiskey rebellion in high school.

Sivad wrote:If this was really about climate change they'd be building nuclear plants and investing at least a couple trillion a year internationally in developing better nuclear technology. It's a scandal that the funding for energy research isn't even 1% of what we spend on the military.

Relative to its size France has probably invested more in nuclear energy than any other country. It has nuclear submarines, a nuclear aircraft carrier, produces 75% of its electricity with nuclear power (highest % in the world by far), is hosting ITER.

Fukushima is killing nuclear, and the questionable future competitiveness (if you factor in all costs). Nuclear is slowly being phased out in Western Europe in general.

True, but you wonder if we had done more nuclear going back the last 60 years. Would carbon emissions be much lower today?

Yes, except their lies with respect to global warming and opposition to nuclear power make no scientific sense whatsoever.

Rancid wrote:I think it's because environmentalist were largely too stupid to even realize that big oil was in on killing nuclear. Had they been smart enough to realize this, they might not have fought nuclear so hard.

If they realized any of this, they wouldn't be fighting energy at all. It is the greatest thing that has ever happened to human civilization.

Rancid wrote:Indeed, but really, if you tried this shit anywhere in the US, it might actually cause a civil war! After all, the US itself was founded over a tax dispute.

There are a lot of Democrats who would vote poverty for themselves if everyone else had to do it too. Only when the deprivation gets too tough does the primal part of the brain override their embrace of fucked up thinking in order to maintain their in-group status within the party.

Victoribus Spolia wrote:Agreed, but I thought the french were into that?

Apparently they are. They recently fined Jean Marie Le Pen for homophobic remarks, which were pretty tame in my view.

France's Jean-Marie Le Pen fined for homophobic remarks

This is what passes for a hate crime in France:

Jean Marie Le Pen wrote:"I think this family trait should have been kept away from such a ceremony which would have benefited from more discretion," Le Pen said at the time in a video blog.

Here's another example of "hate speech" in France:

Jean Marie Le Pen wrote:Le Pen was also found guilty of hate speech for a comment made to Le Figaro newspaper in 2016, when he said that "homosexuals are like salt in soup. If there isn't enough it's a bit bland; when there's too much, it's inedible."

Seems like a solid guy. You can see why France used to be a great power, and why they are such a pointless country today. I do hope the global elite get what they deserve. They seem to be holding off the hordes, but I suspect their day of reckoning will be within my lifetime.

Rugoz wrote:Fukushima is killing nuclear, and the questionable future competitiveness (if you factor in all costs).

Fukushima killed less than 20 people. 20k died in the Tsunami. It's the elite that is trying to put the genie back in the bottle. I don't think it's that easy to do. Small pebble bed reactors in subterranean enclosures would easily address the security concerns of the first reactors. Nobody flies on old aircraft; yet, we hold on to old reactors because of the activists prevent any change. Fukushima owners didn't implement any enhanced measures to prevent disasters so that they could avoid lawsuits. Lawyers are that much of a nuisance.

Rancid wrote:True, but you wonder if we had done more nuclear going back the last 60 years. Would carbon emissions be much lower today?

Yes. Obviously. However, carbon-dioxide is not a pollutant. So we're not worse off in that sense. We have more fly ash and cropped mountains in coal country, but that is a result of stupid people being allowed to vote.

Igor Antunov wrote:These ain't no fuel protests. Yellow Vests are gearing up to storm Macaronis residence. He has called up 90,000 troops to shield himself. Yellow vests are promising to come armed. It's an all-out insurrection.

We can only hope. However, look how long it took to bring Merkel to her knees. Jesus. A so-called conservative that champions an invasion of your country? The EU is the Weimar Republic extended to the entire continent. This won't end well, but like the Weimar Republic, it's lasting longer than makes sense.

This should get the juices of many here flowing;

French Socialists Call for General Strike to Oust Macron, Abolish Senate: http://leftvoice.org/French-Socialists- ... tNmEJ1waKk

Even Leftists are getting in on the action. This is where all the various dissident groups come out of the woodwork. Most revolutions are hijacked mid-way through by niche elements. If it does come down to a collapse of the state, neither the yellow vests nor the mainstream socialist groups will be left holding the reigns. Something new will emerge.
