Following the deaths of 33 Turkish soldiers by Syrian forces in Idlib on Thursday, Erdogan announced that he will be sending all the migrants towards Europe in an attempt to force Europeans to side with him in Syria. He made his threat a reality on Friday after the EU ignored his overtures.

Since Saturday, several thousands of migrants have amassed around the Greek borders and most of them have been prevented from crossing. Greek authorities have officially reported around 10,000 migrants have been prevented entry during 24 hours on Saturday. Some 200 migrants succeeded in crossing during the same time out of which around 40 have been arrested and charged(for the first time in a decade) while the rest are being detained. All of those detained are Afghans, Pakistanis and Somalians. Several reports and witnesses confirm that many of them arrive by the truckloads in Turkish state or state-hired vehicles. A flotilla of 52 naval & coast guard ships has been patrolling the Aegean for the past couple of weeks and has been on high alert since Thursday.

The Greek police & army have adopted a string of very tough measures such as using spray paint all across the border to mark migrants crossing through the forests so that they can spot them later as well as suspending all new asylum application for a month, the summary deportation of those caught in the act, text messaging announcing to anyone coming near the border not to attempt to cross while the infamous sea chain is already under construction and planned to be deployed within the next 3 months. The border crossings are effectively currently under control.

Erdogan had initially announced that he will open the borders for 72 hours and today that these 72 hours lapsed without a dent he promised to keep the borders open indefinitely.

Erdogan is losing ground in Syria, Europe has neither obligation nor interest to prop up the Turkish military activity in Syria as Erdogan is demanding and his migration blackmail has failed to achieve any desired results.

As the EU President put it yesterday: "Our only concern is to support Greece & Bulgaria".

Turkey is using jihadist proxy forces to expand its influence in Syria and Libya and refugees to attack Europe, both are from the same human pool of the refugee camps in the ME. Erdogan is cynically using the refugees as pawns in his power games for a resurrection of the Ottoman empire. The attacks on the Greek border are obviously orchestrated by Ankara.

With the coronavirus spreading out of control from Iran (and Italy) it's out of the question to allow uncontrolled passage of illegal immigrants who may or may not be carriers of the virus. Quarantining each refugee would be a major headache.

This reminds me of Kaffa on the Black Sea when the retreating Mongol armies lobed corpses infected with the plague into this Genoese trading post in 1347, which subsequently spread the black death to most of Europe via the Italian merchant fleet.

Today, they are using living bodies.

Quite apparently the first waves have been prevented from crossing, it now depends on attrition, how long can this be kept up until someone gives up first...

But I think it's obvious at this point that it is futile both for the migrants and for Erdogan, because even if some migrants manage to cross into Greece they have absolutely nowhere to go and a host of hostile and locked down countries to cross in the Balkans and then Austria, Hungary, lol. It's fair to say that noone is going anywhere.

German Foreign Minister: "Migrants should not be used as pawns in geopolitical games"

Turkish Foreign Minister: "Greeks are killing migrants at the border, they shoot them in the back and give weapons to their farmers to kill them."

When asked for evidence he said "a Syrian was in the hospital in Turkey with alleged bullet & rubber pellet marks"
It's funny that a country openly killing Syrians while invading their country is saying that. It takes a special kind of schadenfreude.

Turkey was once upon a time at the ridiculous level but she has well crossed into totally pathetic territory due to her desperation.

Erdogan is openly hostile against Greece shamelessly claiming Greek and consequently EU territory and when his invading army fails in Syria he calls upon the same group that he has painted as arch-enemies to save him from ridicule and when they refuse to do that for the most apparent of reasons, he then truck-loads migrants and proudly sends them to Europe. Now that this has failed too with the migrants failing to break through, Erdogan will certainly up the ante with something even more ridiculous.

Is anyone honestly surprised by this? The agenda is clear to anyone who hasn't lived under a rock the past 2 decades. The EU wants to change the face of Europe. Turkey wants it. Israel wants it. The USA wants it. And the elite of the elite wants it. Their paths of getting there may be different, but they all want the same end goal. The end of old Europe. And for the most part they've already succeeded.

I do not understand. Eventually they will be slaves of the System, instead of masters, just like everybody else. Although
1. Anyone not in power might say it is within their interest as well, and
2. I somewhat think this has been the way for most of the Universe's (or humanity's) history, and does not even need any conspiracy to realise.

In other words, it makes no sense at all.

Your fear & outrage is unwarranted. The South-East Migration route into Europe is closed and laden with right-wing nationalist countries in lock-down mode for a plethora of reasons such as:

a) anti-immigration states ideologically and anti-Muslim migration more particularly,
b) showing Erdogan that Europe cannot be blackmailed
c) coronavirus, etcetera

Thus cementing this position for the foreseeable future.

Well, either way, the damage has already been done.

You're a lot more optimistic about the future of Europe than I am, that's for certain.

euronews wrote:EU chief vows, "We will hold the line and our unity will prevail. Those who seek to test Europe's unity will be disappointed. This border is not only a Greek border but it is also a European border. And I stand here today as a European at your side," Ursula von der Leyen told the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “I thank Greece for being our European ‘aspida’,” the Commission president added, using the Greek word for “shield”.

euronews wrote:Earlier on Tuesday, Austria accused Turkey of blackmailing Europe with the latest migrant crisis, calling it an "attack by Turkey on the European Union and Greece".

"This is now the trial by fire for the European Union whether the external border defence works or not,” Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said in Vienna.

It came as the EU foreign policy chief and other European foreign ministers were meeting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara to find a solution.

“If the external border protection of the European Union doesn't work, then Europe without internal borders is history," Kurz said.

"This is a Turkish campaign. It is an attack by Turkey on the European Union and Greece. People are being abused in order to put pressure on Europe.”

He added: "As the European Union, we mustn't be susceptible to blackmail. If the European Union isn't able to defy President Erdogan then we are not only showing weakness but it's also the beginning of the end.”

@Code Rood
Yours are words, the border defence measures are actions.

The fact that closed borders is being expressed by the highest representative of the EU makes your argument moot for the time being. The EU national governments are right-wing and consequently so is the EU.

The fact that Turkey is doing this to Europe and Greece in particular is an act of war by any reasonable measure. Why is this nonsense still being tolerated?
