Staff members within the University of Oxford’s music department have reportedly suggested removing sheet music from the school’s curriculum because of its purported connections to a "colonial past."

Professors said that music notation has not "shaken off its connection to its colonial past" and that sticking with it would be a "slap in the face" for students of color, according to documents reviewed by the British outlet The Telegraph.

The same faculty also reportedly questioned whether the current curriculum was complicit in "white supremacy," pointing to the program’s focus on "white European music from the slave period" – composers like Mozart and Beethoven.

The professors further suggested that certain classical music skills – like playing the piano and conducting orchestral arrangements – ought not to be required given that they "structurally center white European music" and cause "students of color great distress."

Add this to the long list of everything is racist.

 Look at the source of the report!!! This is a non-issue and a complete fabrication by Fox News to rile up idiots who are interested in the insignificant. 'Discussing something' isn't really a story.

Are you happy that you can call yourself a victim, yet again, over something that isn't important? :knife:

Everything is racist only to racists, who don't like it when they are called what they are.

A lot of behaviors that picket-fence suburbanites would consider *classy* (like conducting an orchestra, or playing lawn darts) are, in fact, saturated with white supremacy signifiers, so I'm glad someone has started the conversation we need to be having about this.

A lot of people no longer like being harassed about twit-obsessions like white shoes after labor day restrictions, and a lot of our prudish cultural diet is similarly trivial and centered in privilege-seeking.

It's very odd to me...

I actually never learned to read sheet music because I thought it seemed harder than reading bass tabs. However, I was told later that it is actually quite easy if you just put in the time...

I never even considered it having anything to do with racism.

When we are striving so hard to politicize even the way that people record music, it is clear that we are living in a highly ideological period, where the oligarchs want their ideology to dominate all discourse.

The music faculty said claims that the university is considering removing sheet music from its curriculum are “completely incorrect.” Oxford is not a typical liberal institution which turns its back on Britain's greatness. Oxford students would study a wider range of non-western music from across the world in addition to traditional European classics.

CLAIM: The U.K.’s University of Oxford is considering removing sheet music from its music curriculum as part of sweeping changes intended to “decolonize” the program.

AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. There are no plans under consideration to remove sheet music or western musical notation from the music curriculum at Oxford University. The music faculty are planning to add new offerings to the curriculum to be announced in the coming months, a representative from the university said.

THE FACTS: Social media users this week are falsely claiming one of the oldest and highest-ranked universities in the world is ditching sheet music as part of an overhaul to combat racism and white supremacy.

“Attack of the woke: Oxford University is considering removing sheet music from its curriculum over claims that musical notation has roots in “colonialism” and “complicity in white supremacy,” one Facebook user wrote on Monday.

“Oxford University may stop teaching sheet music because of its ‘complicity in white supremacy,’” read the headline of an article published Monday in the Canadian outlet The Post Millennial.

The bogus claims, shared thousands of times, have roots in an article published in Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper on Saturday.
