BREAKING: Moscow announces END to massive troop buildup near Ukraine

"Russia's defense minister said Thursday that massive military exercises near the border with Ukraine had been completed, and that he had ordered troops to return to their permanent bases by May 1, according to state media."

"Moscow Troops Withdraw From Ukraine Border After NATO F-16s Intercept Jets Over Baltic

alliance's Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) at Uedem, Germany, sent fighter jets from bases in Estonia, Lithuania and Poland to track the two Russian Tu-160 Blackjack bombers, which were being escorted by Su-27 and Su-35 fighter aircraft.

The Russians were also operating an A-50 Mainstay airborne warning and control plane that was escorted by fighters, NATO said.

The alliance sent up German and Italian fighter aircraft, Polish Air Force F-16s fighters and Royal Danish Air Force F-16s were also deployed. It said the Russian bombers stayed in international airspace above the Baltic Sea and returned to mainland Russia after three hours.

"

Guys, so whats its all about ?

1) a cheap KGB trick

2) the Real End of escalation, Moscow realized that it can´t pull off distraction of our ally in Eastern Europe - Ukraine

I wrote about this in a different topic. If the conflict ends after the sanctions are introduced then the reason for the build up was to make the sanctions less hurtful for Russia by demonstrating that Russia can cause havoc and mayhem if there is nothing to loose. Which kinda worked.

With cost of “black gold” at 15-23 dollars per barrel, the USSR economy collapsed, and the sovok itself collapsed, and the "golden" horde ("russia") budget can only be fulfilled only with oil price at $ 42.4 and higher

While your ideas are true to a degree, while your words are improper it is still kinda a meh argument considering oil is 65 dollars per barrel right now.

Commodities are volatile, that's likely an overshoot.

The question is when (and if) things settle down, and what that price is. While the $40 range was enough for Russia, it's got financial woes that would take quite some time to fix even at 100/bbl.

Kind off but he meant that Russia will have problems under 40 which it will eventually even considering how much it stockpiled. But it doesn't mean that it will not be able to adapt.

I wonder if all the Russia-watchers who confidently predicted a full-blown invasion of Ukraine, including the aerial bombing of Kiev, will reassess. Probably not. :lol:

On a side note, it's very amusing to me that Russia conducting military exercises within its own borders is seen as "aggressive", but when the US and UK send soldiers to Estonia, Poland or Ukraine for the same purpose it is portrayed as "defensive". It's a funny world we live in.

Putin has ambitions, his people have expectations. Neither will be met.

Autocracies and Totalitarian countries can be maintained indefinitely as the NK situation shows. It is a matter of will and not some happiness/economic equation. The expecations of Russian people have not been met since 2008 but Putin and his regime are still around.

We asked the US to be there. While Russia doesn't need somebodies permission to be where it is. The situations are a bit different.

If you are implying that Estonia wants to attack Russia then I will just say no and you will be under the burden of proof of why and i guess also how.

Hilarious, as long as you're not the guy Russia is killing.

It is very probable that if Russia invades the Ukraine again, Russia will collapse as a country like the Soviet Union, especially at this juncture with Navalny in prison, and Russian people angry on the streets.

It would be revolution material and a risk that Putin is evidently unwilling to take.

@litwin

I don't know what it was but one thing is FOR SURE, I am glad Putin didn't invade. That saved a lot of heartache for a lot of people. Thank god he didn't order those troops into Ukraine.

I saw in the news where NATO has a rotation of fighter pilots helping to guard Estonian skies from Russian incursions. Poland had a rotation of fighter pilots and then our pilots replaced the Polish fighter pilots given that the polish pilots completed their deployment and it was our turn. They have been intercepting Russian Migs which have flown into Estonian air space before making them fly away.

@political

Anytime a powerful leader brings out the troops like that, it's very serious business. I don't know if Russia would have collapsed but I will say that was a lot of Russian armor massed at the Ukrainian border. That shit isn't a game and a lot of people could have died if he ordered his troops into Ukraine. I suspected Putin didn't intend to attack and was just trying to send a message given his forces weren't utilizing speed and surprise.

Tit for tat. When that happens, Russia also calls it aggressive. This is the game.

It actually isn't tit for tat, because none of these countries are amassing an army to invade their neighbours and nor are they currently occupying parts of their neighbors.

@noemon

Well, the troops weren't ordered into combat, so that's a win for me. Even if my country's forces would not have been directly involved. Things can quickly spiral out of control and involve my country's forces, so I was glad that Putin ordered his troops to stand down. That being said, though, even though Russia is a powerful country, I would still want my land back if I were the Ukrainians and to take measures to ensure that Russia would be deterred from invading Ukraine in the future.

Fair enough. This is actually more aggressive as it's the amassing of an invasion force.

Reminds me of when I do that in civilization. No one seems to like that. :lol:
