After numerous calls for harsh punishments in recent days, the Iranian parliament on Tuesday voted overwhelmingly in favor of the death penalty for protesters.

Iran has been experiencing unprecedented levels of protests and civil unrest since the death of Mahsa Amini on September 16. The 22-year-old Kurdish woman was arrested by the country's "morality police" for supposedly wearing an "improper" form of hijab during a visit to Tehran and allegedly beaten severely while in custody. The beatings are believed to have led to her death from a fatal head injury, but Iranian authorities have denied the accusation.

In the wake of Amini's death, there have been large-scale nationwide protests the likes of which Iran has not seen in decades. Female protesters have notably taken to burning their hijabs and cutting their hair in public in defiance of the rules imposed by Iran's Islamic government, under the leadership of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iranian lawmakers have, in recent days, called for strict punishments for the protesters who have been arrested. On Monday, CNN reported that a letter signed by 227 members of the Iranian parliament urged that the protesters be given harsh punishment that "would serve as a good lesson in the shortest possible time."

"Now, the public, even protesters who are not supportive of riots, demand from the judiciary and security institutions to deal with the few people who have caused disturbances in a firm, deterrent, and legal manner," Iranian government spokesman Masoud Setayeshi said, according to Reuters.

On Tuesday, parliament did just that, voting to impose the death penalty on all protesters in custody as a "hard lesson" for all rebels. The majority in favor of the penalty was considerable, 227 out of the 290 total members, matching the number of lawmakers who signed the letter.

It is unclear when the executions will be carried out, but the task will potentially be significant. As of Thursday, CNN reported, about 14,000 people had been arrested in connection with the recent protests. On Tuesday, Carnegie Endowment fellow Karim Sadjadpour said the number was nearing 15,000.

"In the last 8 weeks Iran's regime has killed over 300 protestors, imprisoned nearly 15,000, and threatened to execute hundreds more, yet Iran's women persist," Sadjadpour wrote in a tweet. "Today female university students removed their forced hejab and chant, 'I am a free woman.'"

Several prominent figures in Iran are calling for a response from foreign governments.

"Outrageous! After killing 100s of protesters on the streets & a violent crackdown, 227 MPs in Iran called the protesters "Mohareb" & asked the judiciary to issue "retribution" sentences [execution]," journalist Omid Memarian tweeted on Sunday. "The world should respond. Dangerous!"

In response to the parliament vote, activist and journalist Masih Alinejad tweeted: "227 members of the 290-seat Parliament in Iran have called on the Judiciary to issue death sentences for people arrested during the ongoing uprising. They want to execute innocent protesters who chanted Woman Life Freedom. The world must stop this act of terror."

Newsweek reached out to the Iranian government for comment.

ABSOLUTELY BARBARIC! >:

I want to believe that they aren't stupid enough to go through with it, but I can't discount it. They killed 1500 or so civilian protesters 3 years ago. Ratching up the bodycount even higher is stability imposed by terror, a measure that almost always backfires.

In a way what we we see in Iran at the moment, is a vindication of what I've been arguing for decades, that the best way to de-islamify countries populations is to let them have self determination and democracy. To some extent its only through letting people elect or select theocratic leaders that people can start to see through the lies of Islam.

In Christian countries the process of de-Christianisation has been going on for over 600 years beginning with Jan Hus. What a lot of people fail to understand is that the Reformation was an essential part of de-christianisation. Christianity, Islam and Marxism are all the same in that they can not allow free speech. If they want to survive long term, it is vital that they exterminate anyone that debunks Christianity, debunks Islam or debunks Communism. But this is not enough if these religions are to survive long term, There must be only one form of these religions. Anyone who seeks to argue for an alternative form of the religion must be exterminated as well.

This is why Joseph Stalin went to such trouble to exterminate Leon Trotsky and why socialism in one country was so important. East German, Poland, etc were independent countries in name only, but as soon as Stalin made the mistake of allowing independent Communist countries first with Yugoslavia and then with China the trouble started. And of course to the extent that the Eastern block countries did have any independence it only led to trouble. By the end of the Cold War the Communists were putting far more of their energy in to fighting other Communists than spreading Communism.

This is why the Shia are so vital to the destruction of Islam and why the Saudi regime puts such effort into the suppression of the Shia both within Saudi and without. This is why the the Alawite traitor Hafez Assad put such efforts into Sunnifying Alawiteism.

What do you mean non-binding. The parliament voted in favour. Since when do parliamentary decisions/votes are non-binding unless you are going to say that the supreme leader is going to veto that which he won't since by the looks of it, he was the initiator in the first place.

Duh, that means it's not a law.

Iran's regime and the millions of hard core supporters of the regime have a choice to make. They need to decide whether they really care about Islam or they want to try and seek approval from western liberals. Because be under no illusions if you allow free speech and democracy it will destroy Islam. It won't be quick, its won't be like Communism in Russia where you opened up and five minutes later Communism collapsed. No in the United States, Ireland, Poland for example Christianity has taken a very long time dying, but dying it surely is.

I've always said that I'm fine with Islam as long as they can pass one simple test. They must allow and not try to prevent girls from entering into Civil Lesbian Partnerships. You see I'm being quite reasonable here I'm not even demanding full gay marriage. Any form of Islam that seeks to prevent this, we should seek to eradicate. The same goes for any form of Christianity, Judaism and Mormonism, or for that matter any form of Hinduism or Buddhism as well.

Sometimes i just wonder if you are some long-lost brother of Qatz that grew up under different circumstances.

This is typical of the Islamic Republic of Iran, under the ayatollahs, and the Supreme Leader, from the time of Khomeini up to now. The main justification for this is that according to their severely strict interpretation of Islam, the penalty for apostacy is death. And since in Iran the nation and the religion is viewed as being one and the same, to oppose the regime is to go up against Allah. These demonstrators would just be in addition to the numerous comrades already slaughtered in cold blood by this bloodthirsty religious cult state, since the time of the Revolution , for nothing more than committing thought crimes. For an example, the 1988 execution of prisoners. Many of the current old guard of the ruling establishment were complicit in regard to this matter. https://www.hrw.org/news/2022/06/08/irans-1988-mass-executions , https://irantribunal.com/mass-executions/history-of-mass-executions-in-1980s/ , https://iranprimer.usip.org/blog/2021/jul/21/raisi-role-1988-massacre

Surprise !

This was propaganda, probably trying to justify a war of the USA against Iran.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/11/ ... -explainer

First reported by Newsweek, they were so widespread that even Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, tweeted about the claim, saying: “Canada denounces the Iranian regime’s barbaric decision to impose the death penalty on nearly 15,000 protesters.”

But, considering this source, clearly it would have been cool if Iran would have blocked their bank accounts so these people couldnt even buy food anymore, also likely instructed the website that collected money for the protesters to steal said money, and called the by vast majority peaceful protesters summarily violent, nazis, rapists etc without any evidence whatsoever for any of those things.

The news of the executions appears to have stemmed [...]
RIGHT. Sure. It was all a clerical error.

Including inventing a letter by the parliament. Quite the accident.

Funny how these "errors" only ever happen in ONE direction.

I suspected propaganda. I really had to control myself from just flying off the handle. I mean if there ever were a reason to invade, surely it would be to save 15 000 defenseless protesters, most of whom would be women. So yeah, I’m glad it’s fake.

There is a less than zero chance we will invade Iran.

1) Nobody invades a nuclear power, and they could build a nuke. They don't want one, which makes what Trump did insane.

2) We have our hands full with Ukraine.

3) We've stopped doing military adventures, or something very close to it.

4) Iran is awkward. You wouldn't want to attack from the Gulf, it's uphill all the way. Attacking from Afghanistan would be...awkward. Turkey is deeply pissed at the West, for a variety of reasons. We would have to go in from Iraq, and I don't think they would like the idea. Not that we will do such a thing, just that it's inadvisable, very.

The problem is exactly that those have the power to destroy tyrannies are not "insane" enough, or that they only pick small, easy-to-beat ones.

That said, it's a fact that Trump failed flat and square.

You just didn’t understand me. Of course invading Iran would be total insanity. I’ve not seen a rational invasion in my lifetime. That piece of propaganda was quite emotive, that’s all. Even a peacenik like me would want to blow the Ayatollahs away if they were going to execute 15 000 protesters.
