The UK government is believed to find even a long-term lending of the Marbles to Greece intolerable. Sunak said, 'The British Museum's collection is legally protected, and we don't intend to alter that'

London: Rishi Sunak, on Monday ruled out possibilities of changing the law in order to permanently return the controversial Elgin Marbles to Greece.

The sculptures have been the focus of a contentious ownership conflict with Greece for decades. They were removed from the Parthenon temple in Athens by British diplomat Lord Elgin in the 19th century.

George Osborne, the chairman of the British Museum, is allegedly trying to negotiate a deal with the Greek Government so that the cultural treasures can be viewed in both Greece and Britain.

The British Museum is free to determine what to do with its artefacts, but the law forbids it from selling its treasures unless certain conditions are met.

The UK government is believed to find even a long-term lending of the Marbles to Greece intolerable.

Sunak said, “The Elgin Marbles have been looked after by the Kingdom for many years.

“Our museums and art galleries are supported by public because they are a priceless asset for this nation.”

“We show the world their assets, and the world travels to the UK to view them.”

“The British Museum’s collection is legally protected, and we don’t intend to alter that.”

They should be returned. As should much of it.

I mean what is the difference for the museum visitors between the actual object and a 3d printed copy?

Why does authenticity matter SO much?

It's about prestige and status as it always has been.

I donlt think everything should necessarily go back, but a serious reappraisal of where things are held and the Rosetta stone and marbles would be a good gesture. A lot of things should go back. There should be more joint custody of the world's past. More interchange between museums.

Much of it isn't even on display.

The British Museum collection totals at least 8 million objects. Roughly 80,000 objects are on public display at the British Museum in Bloomsbury at any one time.

3,000 or so are loaned out to other institutions each year.

7,917,000 objects sit in a warehouse, not able to be viewed by anyone, gathering dust, and millions of these are stolen cultural relics from countries that very much want them back.

The Chinese know how to deal with these museums!

GQ wrote:Strange how it keeps happening, how the greatest works of Chinese art keep getting brazenly stolen from museums around the world. Is it a conspiracy? Vengeance for treasures plundered years ago? We sent Alex W. Palmer to investigate the trail of theft and the stunning rumor: Is the Chinese government behind one of the boldest art-crime waves in history?

'We show the world their assets, and the world travels to the UK to view them', says first gypsy UK PM making history with his premiership.

With Brexit the UK actually made it easier for the world to hold them at gunpoint and rob their assets back from them robbers sooner or later.

So Elgin was the name of the robber having robbed the marbles from Greece.

What a sympathetic guy indeed.

Having thought about this, there should be no more give, give, give to the Liberal Elite. We need some give and take. The Elgin Marbles should only be returned after the Mediterranean has been made safe for Infidels. The Elgin Marbles should only be returned after the Turkey has been kicked out of Cyprus and other territories they have occupied. We should only give the Liberal Elite another concession on their beloved symbolic identity issues, once they've actually delivered on a matter of substance.

Or maybe Greece should have put the issue on the table in the Brexit negotiations.

This is an opportune moment for the UK to buy some international goodwill but it will cost them to do so. If they open the floodgates, they'll likely have to return quite a bit, so I understand why Sunak is taking a hardline. The Koh-i-noor alone is valued at $400 million. :excited:

You think his skin colour is the most defining characteristic. Personally, I think it is that he's an Oxford and Goldman Sachs alumni. :p
