London: Rishi Sunak, on Monday ruled out possibilities of changing the law in order to permanently return the controversial Elgin Marbles to Greece.

The sculptures have been the focus of a contentious ownership conflict with Greece for decades. They were removed from the Parthenon temple in Athens by British diplomat Lord Elgin in the 19th century.

George Osborne, the chairman of the British Museum, is allegedly trying to negotiate a deal with the Greek Government so that the cultural treasures can be viewed in both Greece and Britain.

The British Museum is free to determine what to do with its artefacts, but the law forbids it from selling its treasures unless certain conditions are met.

Why does authenticity matter SO much?

It's about prestige and status as it always has been.

I donlt think everything should necessarily go back, but a serious reappraisal of where things are held and the Rosetta stone and marbles would be a good gesture. A lot of things should go back. There should be more joint custody of the world's past. More interchange between museums.

Much of it isn't even on display.

The British Museum collection totals at least 8 million objects. Roughly 80,000 objects are on public display at the British Museum in Bloomsbury at any one time.

3,000 or so are loaned out to other institutions each year.

7,917,000 objects sit in a warehouse, not able to be viewed by anyone, gathering dust, and millions of these are stolen cultural relics from countries that very much want them back.

However, Obama's at least a real political leader (not a tribune, of course), whereas Sunak's just a maitre d'hotel. He's not serving the public, though.

This is an opportune moment for the UK to buy some international goodwill but it will cost them to do so. If they open the floodgates, they'll likely have to return quite a bit, so I understand why Sunak is taking a hardline. The Koh-i-noor alone is valued at $400 million.
