Trump is testing Thune right off the bat. If the Senate rolls over and lets Trump have this guy —- universally hated in Congress — be the AG, then he knows the Senate will rubber stamp anything our dictator wants.

Not the 'Matt Gaetz', the congressman who is reputed to be a hard-drugs user, sex trafficker, and kiddie fiddler, as attorney general?

Trump's taking the piss.

Yes, and he is a very moral man. Just like Trump is. Jesus picked him. These people are the real scum of the Earth. But....they are God's picks.

No, it will be fine.

I also think that the billionaires will take care of us properly.

The most powerful country in the world, run by the Keystone Cops.

If I didn't sympathize, it would be funny.

There is no revolutionary left in America. It's a country that worships billionaires like Gods.

It is a secret vote, so it’s possible there are 4 of these cowardly Republican senators with enough guts to stop this. Trump picked this guy to lead his “retribution” against his political opponents. Or he could just go full-Putin and order a murder, if somebody becomes a serious problem. We are entering uncharted waters.

To be completely fair, from what I have read, this is the most we can conclude:
- Gaetz is friends with a guy named Joel Greenberg
- He went to Greenberg's parties that had drug use and sex with prostitutes
- Greenberg trafficked one girl who was a minor under the age of 18 but above the age of 14; she is identified as having been 17 at the time and having met Greenberg through the internet in some reports
- One of the charges against him was obtaining a fake ID for her, apparently in an effort to facilitate her role as a sex worker
- Nothing in the public record so far appears to link Gaetz to the 17-year old
- Gaetz is alleged by one person to have paid her via Venmo for sex; said person is not said to be the 17-year old
- Greenberg was also arrested for some financial crimes in addition to framing someone for racist posts on the Internet and trying to defraud them from a position; he also made a fake ID for himself
- Gaetz was unmarried. He described some Venmo payments as being gracious towards ex-girlfriend[s?]
It seems like it would be not be undue to speculate that Gaetz has banged prostitutes. It would seem likely he may have used narcotics recreationally. In Asia & Europe, the rates of prostitution visits by men range from 10% to upwards fo 50%, and some of the data out of Europe is limited to 'in the last 5 years, so the number of European men who have banged the pros in their life may be quite high.

Narcotics use is a winning issue in the USA - the only people really opposing it are Christian conservatives.

Greenberg was arrested in June of 2020, and since then, no information has come forward that have implicated Gaetz in anything with underage girls, and there's not much in terms of evidence of him paying women himself for shreks, which I think means that we will likely not see much in terms of Gaetz being charged.

Persisting in calling him a "pedophile" is a bit off since there's no proof of that, and let's say he did bang a 17 year old girl claiming to be older who had a fake ID on her... Obviously, terrible, should be charged, but dropping the 'P' word on him like people are doing is a stretch.

Sex crimes is the least of it. He was on the wrong side of the insurrection, Big Lie, etc. That’s the only way he could possibly get this job. He would be the Attorney General of the USA who his proven he has zero respect for rule of law. Trump has his man. Now we see whether there are 5 Republican Senators to prevent a fascist DOJ loyally serving our fascist president. This is Thune’s first test. If he can’t stop Trump here, it’s hard to say what, if anything, is the limit in Congress.

From what I have heard about him , in terms of legal theory , Matt Gaetz seems to be comparable to Carl Schmitt , among other jurists in the Third Reich . https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/law-and-justice-in-the-third-reich Such a subversion of the foundation of the constitutional order would be required for the consolidation of political power under a totalitarian regime . And this is precisely what has been transpiring in the United States in recent years .

Liberals I'm so, so sorry!

I feel terrible having to be the bearer of these evil tidings. But after Bill Clinton we weren't going to listen moral lectures to do with sex from you. I realise this must come as a terrible shock. Bill Clinton committed a legal offense, perjury and a moral offense, the deliberate character assassination of a woman he had had the most intimate physical relations. It is the latter that so many of us find just unimaginable. We were also shocked by the behaviour of Bill Clinton's wife, who we thought had progressive views on women, but who seemed complicit in this vile sexist behaviour.

- There was no insurrection. And if we are even going to take the deluded perspective that an insurrection occurred, it would be an incredible statement to say that Gaetz was involved in the planning and the rioting...

- The "Big Lie," I am guessing, refers to the fact that he questions the 2020 election results. Are you sure you're ready to start a precedent where questioning election results merits never being allowed to head any sort of important government agency or even jail time?

You should understand why what you are saying is actually very destructive for freedom in Ameirca.

1. There was an insurrection.
2. Gaetz defended it.
3. The election was not rigged. Biden fairly elected. MAGA politicians cannot afford to admit.

I don’t think Thune has the votes to confirm him. If he allows recess appointments, the Senate will roll over for anything.

What do you think Thune will do? I know what Rick Scott would do, but Thune might actually have one ounce of integrity.

Verv wrote:- There was no insurrection.

The afternoon that elector ballots were to be formally counted inside the Capitol building to confirm Biden as POTUS winner a large mass of supporters from the losing candidate violently rioted in order to get inside the building to stop the confirmation, and they did stop it temporarily. Police officers and rioters died. That's an insurrection by any definition.

The crazy thing is I think most of them thought they were patriots and that the election was actually stolen because Mr Conman conned them into believing his lies.

Trump and his lawyers also tried to overturn the election results via a scheme of fake balloters, which they wanted to hand to Pence for him to count instead of the real ballots on Jan 6. But the state electors and Pence wouldn't play ball, because they aren't naive and stupid like his supporters or a bunch of tyrants like Trump. That was an illegal coup attempt to defraud American electors. Trump, his lawyers, and everyone else involved belong in prison.
