I have empathy for criminals, as I know that not all of them are irredeemable. You seem to imply that. To your suggestion that I am offended. Feelings have nothing to do with this, and you are displaying a great many, since facts don't support such a heavy-handed punishment from crimes.

Burning a car is a mistake. I am sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but people often make bad decisions. Some worse than others. Not all of these mistakes merit a life sentence, or permanent punishment. A car can be paid for.

Burning a car is not a mistake. If someone told you "I ACCIDENTALLY burned your car and destroyed it" yeah that makes no fucking sense. It takes enough energy to burn a car for it to not be a mistake. Making the choice maybe a "mistake" but they would only claim that to make themselves look good.

@Godstud, Burning a car is threatening because if someone needs a car to get to their job, and if their car gets destroyed, then how are they going to get to their job? Not everyone has affiliations to help them at the moment. To some people, their car is a necessity. Some druggies have impaired senses, so they tend to misuse their power and they tend to abuse those below them.

Sterilizing a person for causing another person to lose a job by burning their car(a very unlikely scenario), is a very extreme punishment.

Drug users can be treated. This is a fact. That we concentrate on punishing more than treating, is a problem.

Horseshit. I am for suitable punishments. The punishment should fit the crime. You'd have a person sterilized for vandalism, or drug addiction.

Sterilization is permanent. You'd have a person be punished for life, for something they could repay to society, or for something that they could be cured from(drug addiction). That's extreme and totalitarian. You don't need to be a Liberal to see that.

Something interesting to point out...

In the old days, there were natural controls on society that made it so those who were career criminals or who were other sorts of ne'er do wells would not have the means to survive and procreate so freely. But we now live in an age where we ensure that people who do not work generally can make it through life and procreate to their hearts content.

I think SSDR is basically just wanting to maintain this favorable circumstance of allowing people to live, but simply putting a check on the reproduction of the lowest elements. It's not entirely irrational at all.

Choosing husbands for women is slavery. No one's love should be chosen. Arranged marriages must be ended.

"Suitable" = Just. Taking away the reproductive rights of a person for vandalism, or drug use, is not just. Them paying compensation for it, to society, is. It's a reason why we don't have the death penalty for jay-walking.
