Where i'd be willing to stop racist speech is, for example, in a busy intersection on the sidewalk somebody kept loudly yelling out racist speech for a long tiem. I could see the police coming and saying it was disturbing the peace, public nuisance or something like that. Not much different than if somebody was yelling anything on a busy public sidewalk, especially inflammatory remarks like calling people ugly or fat, and causing an uproar. Similarly, it can be illegal to post a large pornographic sign on your property for everyone to see. Children don't want to see that, and shouldn't don't need to be exposed to the N-word either, so that kind of "adult" and "obscene" speech could be restricted.
In those situations you're forcing people to witness your speech, including children. It's a different thing if it's more private, like publishing a book or film or article or website. Where people can very easily ignore something like that I don't see how racist speech should be banned/censored by government. Not because I'm pro-racism, but because I'm anti the government controlling what to we can say and believe.
Never let facts get in the way of a good narrative.
