Generally, I find political correctness to be un-American. No right thinking person should sign up to have thoughtless knee-jerk reactions to every stimuli thrown out there. It sort of defeats the point of being human.
Apparently, it is very offensive today for some people to realize that someone else dressed up in black face 30+ years ago. It is so offensive to them, that they think a person who has dressed in black face at any time in their life should not hold high office.
At any rate, the Democrats find themselves in a quandary of their own making in Virginia. Somehow, it was overlooked--probably because Republican campaign strategists are so incredibly fucking useless that they never bothered to do a deep background check on their opponent--that Governor Northam, a white man, had very likely dressed in blackface in a picture in his college year book, and apparently was known as "the coon" among his mates. Northam at first apologized for the picture, then denied that he was in the picture. However, he did acknowledge dressing in blackface while doing a Michael Jackson impersonation and moonwalking at a "talent show." This has so many people so upset, that they think Governor Northam should resign, which would make Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax the governor.
Justin Fairfax, a black man, succeeding Ralph Northam as governor would be seen as some sort of "social justice." However, Lt. Governor Fairfax stands accused of sexual assault by a woman who remembers the time, place and vivid details of the account--forced oral copulation. Following the Democrats' mantra during the Kavanaugh hearings, a female accuser is supposed to be believed. So some suggest that Lt. Governor Fairfax should step down too, while others are feigning ignorance of the matter or distancing themselves from the political positions they held on believing accusers just six months ago (Dianne Feinstein among them). If Ralph Northam and Justin Fairfax were to resign, Attorney General Mark Herring would succeed them both.
Mark Herring, a white man, succeeding Ralph Northam and Justin Fairfax could be seen as restoring some semblance of order to the current chaos in Virginia. However, there is a problem--and no, I am not making this up: Mark Herring has also dressed up in blackface in his young adult life. Hence, the likely outcome would be a member of the Republican-controlled legislature.
I never realized that dressing up in blackface was so popular in the South among white collegiates. Apparently it was. What I don't understand is why people purport to find it so offensive. I found Eddie Murphy's "whiteface" act on Saturday Night Live hysterically funny.
I guess we're supposed to find Tootsy and Mrs. Doubtfire offensive for non-trans people cross dressing and making other people laugh at other people's struggles with gender identity.
Is it me, or is political correctness a sign of functional insanity?
