Although the Federal Reserve is not a part of the Federal Government, it is a creature born from the government and it has powers that far exceed that of many Federal institutions.

It wields far too much politically granted power to remain independent from scrutiny.

Even if the government doesn't meddle in the FED's affairs, the expectation of government meddling alone will induce a higher rate of inflation (with no obvious return).

Being as US inflation seems on course to return to 2 percent norm, there's basically no reason that would be desirable.
