Have you guys heard of this case at all lately? Apparently it's causing people to question the whole Sex Offenders Registry. To make a long story short he is 19 and had sex with a girl who claimed she was 17 but girl lied about her age and was really 14. In court the girl and her mother admitted the sex was consensual but the judge gave Zach 90 days in jail, 5 years with no computer, internet, or phone and 25 years on the SOR. The law is the law. Even if it was consensual, she was underage. That is still illegal. How can we determine if it was consensual? The girl is a minor at the time. The law makes provisions for minors. Minors are not held responsible for their acts unless it's proven that they were capable of understanding the ramifications of their actions. This guy cannot be an exception because then any lawyer can dispute the underage thing clause and then the consensual aspect will affect not only underage sex cases but also leak into minors signing into fraudulent contracts with adults, the minors being fooled into signing an illegal contract.

Actually where I live a 14 year old girl can legally consent withing a five year age range. Also if you read the story you saw that the girl and her mother both admitted it was consensual and pleaded for Zach to be let go. Thirdly I notice we charge 14 year olds as adults all the time. In fact we put an 8 year old boy on the sex offenders registry for life, so I guess age of consent depends on how much money the state can make.

I'm against the Sex offender registry and if I had my way I'd have it abolished.

It is highly misused. People are put on it on the mere accusations of a crime, and there is no innocent until proven guilty.

Mere accusations are not proof and the onus should be on the accuser, not the defender.

That's not true. People are placed on offender registries after being found (or pleading) guilty of a sex crime. You can't just be arbitrarily placed on it.

I don't see the use of sex offender registries anyway. How will letting everyone know where someone commits a crime live and work keep us safe? Do you know where all the repeat drunk drivers live? Or repeat drug users or worse, drug dealers live? Please explain to me how destroying this kids life makes anyone safer?
