Criminal punishment is definitely harsher in the US than it is in Europe, but does anyone else find this a little bit excessive?

Two men, one armed with a knife, forced the woman who had answered the door to the ground, duct-taped her wrists and ankles and taped her to a chair, and later poured bleach on the tape and her clothing in an attempt to clear any evidence left behind. The two left with $80-$100 cash from the woman's purse and her cellphone.
The woman was able to break free and call police after the men left.

Joseph Lanckriet, 25, was arrested after authorities matched DNA taken from a bandage he left at the scene. He had been the one wielding the knife in the robbery. Lanckriet then told police the name of the other man who was involved in the incident. Lanckriet was sentenced in to 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to the charges of "first-degree burglary" and "second-degree robbery".

The home invasion had taken place in 2014 in Sioux City, Iowa.

The other man who had been involved was Thomas Woodard, 35. He was found guilty by a Woodbury County District Court jury on the charges of "first-degree robbery" and "first-degree burglary" and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Woodard must serve at least 17.5 years of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.

Four years later, Woodard along with another prisoner killed a prison nurse and a guard during an escape attempt.
