I saw 2 videos about new energy storage systems intended to store Solar and wind electricity energy so it can be used later to convert it back into electricity.

The 1st one stores the energy in a way similar of storing cold by making ice. It just uses a different melting/freezing phase change that happens at a much higher temp. And obviously it stores heat instead of cold.

It uses 2 common and fairly cheap substances, carbon in the form of graphite and pure (?) aluminium.
The idea is to house the aluminium inside the higher melting point graphite, melt the hot solid al with high temp. air heated with green electricity, then hours or days later cool the very hot liquid al past its freezing point to release the “heat of fusion” to heat air to make steam to drive the steam turbines in old coal fired power plants to make the electricity. Here the hard part is getting the air in close contact with the hot solid al to melt it or with the very hot liquid al to 'freeze' it fast enough to make enough steam fast enough.

The 2nd one just heats crushed rock to do the same thing. In this case the hard part is to keep the expansion of the rock as it is heated very hot from pulverizing itself or damaging the container, like freezing water in a glass bottle will break the bottle.
