Theodore Roosevelt was probably the best president in U.S. history.

He came up in the "age of imperialism" similar to William McKinley who was recognized for exactly what he was after the forceful annexation of Hawaii and other actions and struck down by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz for it, so I would levy harsh criticism at Roosevelt both for his personal twisted Germanophobia and for his liberal imperialism and attitude toward Spain and other great powers which was more a product of the politics of the state than his character. But one can say he was genuinely interested in narrowing the wealth gap in the so-called Gilded Age and ending the worth excesses of exploitation described vividly in works like Upton Sinclair's The Jungle with legislation like the Square Deal, and gets bonus points for his emphasis on land conservation and environmental protection (father of the national park system, with help and inspiration from the naturalist and great soul John Muir). The latter didn't just impact the U.S., but the creation of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming/Montana/Idaho which came to be promoted as the first national park in the world, created an effective management system for the protection of spectacular natural sites worldwide, so directly or indirectly one can easily say he did the most out of any U.S. president to safeguard biodiversity. It was largely all downhill from there.
