Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono, in response to a question from the former Foreign Minister of Japan, made everyone doubt the technical capabilities of the American missile defense systems «Patriot» and «Aegis».

According to the test results of «Aegis» and its ground-based version of «Aegis Ashore», which use the SM-3 interceptor missiles, it turned out that they are capable of shooting down ballistic missiles only in ideal conditions. That is, when a missile flies along an unchanged path without any obstacles, which means that they are useless against Russian «Iskander» missiles.

As for the «Patriot» systems, they failed badly in Saudi Arabia, missing the attack at the refinery.

So why does Japan continue to purchase these defense systems «semblance» from the United States?

The Patriot defence system is not designed to intercept cruise missiles.
Against incoming low- and medium altitude rockets it performs extremely well.

A dime of offense still beats a buck of defense.

The Aegis Ashore land-based missile interceptor systems could struggle to shoot down the latest North Korean missile types. The tests are required to show the system is working properly, which would cost about $100 million per launch. The latest launch of two projectiles into the Sea of Japan, if confirmed as a missile test, would be North Korea’s 12th missile launch this year.

@BigSteve

Those Trident 2 D5 SLBMs perform very well too and are very accurate with their super-fuze technology. They are capable of taking out Russia's hardened nuclear missile silos given they are that accurate. Trident 2 D5 SLBMs keep the Russians up at night and I am sure their hackers keep our guys at the NSA up at night. Or they should be at least.
