Ahed Tamimi is a chlld activist who lives in a village called Nabi Saleh in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. She is a member of the Tamimi family, who are somewhat known for their consistent activism against the Israeli occupation. Her father is Bassem Tamimi, who I saw speak in NYC a year or two ago, he reported on his family's struggle against Israeli occupation, which keeps eating up his village and taking control of their water.
His daughter, Ahed, was arrested by the IDF on the morning of 19th Dec, for slapping and kicking a soldier who was on her family property, on the morning after her 14-year-old cousin was shot in the face by the IDF on that same property.
By morning, I mean, 30 Israeli soldiers raided the Tamimi home at 4am, ransacked the house, confiscated phones and laptops and arrested Ahed. She was taken on her own, which isn't uncommon for Palestinian children. 4am is also not an uncommon time for Israeli soldiers to arrest children, it's pretty typical, you can see lots of videos on YouTube of this happening. Around 300 minors are currently under Israeli "detention" right now.
A little bit after the IDF arrested Ahed and violently threw her mother to the ground when she attempted to hug her, her mother went to the prison Ahed was being held in, and was also arrested for having the audacity to see how her teenage daughter was doing. A female cousin was also arrested, for protesting outside the prison. Both her mother and cousin have been released.
Ahed has since been indicted on 12 charges, including slapping a soldier, throwing stones and uploading video footage of her experience living under military occupation all of her life. Uploading videos of reality on social media are considered "incitement" according to Israeli authorities, since it displays Israeli occupation for what it is. And this recording of reality is criminalized, in that only democracy in the Middle East.
Israeli media has been up in arms about this Palestinian child attacking occupying forces on her own land. Israeli masculinity is offended. One prominent Israeli journalist - who also writes op-eds in the NYTimes - called for Ahed to be raped in detention "away from cameras".
Ahed is now seen as a symbol of Palestinian resistance against zionist lebensraum. She remains in Israeli detention and is very likely going to be imprisoned for years, since this is also untypical of what Israel does to children in Palestine.
A couple of days ago in a hearing, Ahed was asked by a judge, how she hit the soldier. She responded with “Take off these handcuffs and you will see how”.
